Economy erodes election hope for Democrats (Reuters-Ipsos poll confirms slide in Dem enthusiasm)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Americans by a large majority believe President Barack Obama has not focused enough on job creation, as economic fears threaten Democrats ahead of November 2 congressional elections, a Reuters-Ipsos poll found on Tuesday.

In a sign of trouble ahead for the Democrats, the poll found evidence of a sizable enthusiasm gap with Republicans more energized about voting in the elections.

Americans expressed deep unhappiness with the direction of the economy, which in the poll they identified overwhelmingly as the country's top problem.

The U.S. unemployment rate is at a stubbornly high 9.5 percent and Obama has spent much of the year on issues like Wall Street reform and healthcare in addition to jobs.

People were more negative about Obama's performance on the economy than on any other question surveyed. Satisfaction was dropping more sharply on the issue than on any other question.

Only 34 percent approved of Obama's handling of the economy and jobs compared to 46 percent who deemed it unsatisfactory. This is a sharp decline from early 2009, shortly after he took office, when more than half of those surveyed approved of Obama's handling of the worst financial crisis in decades.

Overall, the July 22-25 national poll of 1,075 adults gave Obama an approval rating of 48 percent, a small decline from a June survey that had him at 50 percent approval.

This is in line with other polls showing his approval rating under 50 percent and evidence that for all the country's problems, Obama remains generally well-liked.

"People still feel insecure about their future," said Ipsos pollster Cliff Young. "They are spending less and saving more. They're not buying a larger house or car or other luxuries because they're worried -- and that worry also manifests itself on the political side."

LOL! It’s a poll of adults which usually skews the numbers to the benefit of the Dems. The real numbers are actually worse than this poll indicates.

I plan to make this a November to remember! Hopefully the rest of the country does too. I keep envisioning a very glum looking election night where they inform the public that the dems lost every seat up for election. :)

The Dems are terrible at governing because they are interested only in increasing their power.

America has survived 3 years of Democrat Congressional dominance but it has come at high price.

“Overall, the July 22-25 national poll of 1,075 adults gave Obama an approval rating of 48 percent...”

Adjusted to likely voters, the 48 becomes something less.

The challenge for conservatives is to transfer unhappiness with Obama to 435 dem House candidates, and 36 dem Senate candidates.

Say to voters: “If you want more of the same harmful policies, vote democrat. If you want to end one party rule, vote for me.”

...”People were more negative about Obama’s performance...”

...which people are unhappy?....LaKeisha and DeShawn ain’t negative about Obama’s performance...think they’re negative down at the SEIU union hall?....think again!...teacher’s union going negative?...ACORN?....the Unions and the underclass are just fine with Obama; thank you very much.

....the white middle class will do what it always does in Nov...argue amongst themselves and then stay home...this fantasy of a big conservative sweep is just that...fantasy...there’s more Dem votes in just one inner city public housing project than all the Freepers put together...and community organizers will deliver them like clockwork.

Truth be told, you’d inquire about their condition for the past 4 years, the time the democrats have had control of Congress.
When they talk about policies that ‘created’ this crisis, ask do they know where Obama and Biden were when this was happening?

Same here. I'm going to have MSNBC in the loop just so I don't miss the pair of shoes swaying back and forth at the top of the screen about midnight.

Remember Election Night ‘04 when George W was re-elected and Dan Rather kept telling Ed Bradley that he must not be doing the math right? I suspect we will be treated to a lot of that.

Even phony pollsters can only cook the books just so much.

These types of stories are only published to make the voter gap look better than it is, and to scare the Demwits to the polls. The living ones I mean, the dead ones always show up somehow.

Hemreuters can't even push a propaganda poll to shore up der Furhrer. I particularly loved this line:

The U.S. unemployment rate is at a stubbornly high 9.5 percent and Obama has spent much of the year on issues like Wall Street reform and healthcare in addition to jobs.

I went to the link. Every propaganda talking point is there.

Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish and the data weighted to ensure that the sample's composition reflected that of the actual U. S. population according to U. S. Census figures.

Translation: This was poll that would make Reuters a contender for the La Raza Affirmative Action Award, since they included aliens as part of the "U.S. population." Accordingly, the results were skewed in favor of Obama and his administration.

The Republicans are hoping to win control of the house of Representatives in November and pick up seats in the Senate.

Memo to Reuters: Republicans are hoping to win control of the Senate as well!

And this poll is of "adults", not even registered voters, much less likely voters.

Dims are going to take one heck of a shot come Nov 2nd.

I don't even know why many of them are even running...

The other reason the Dems are terrible at governing has to do with the economic cycle. Traditionally, at least in modern times, Republicans have come into office at the beginning of a downturn, and they have cut taxes and initiated a strong recovery. Them Dems come in and tax the country into a recession. Then a Republican comes in and cleans up the mess.

This time Obama came in at the beginning of a downturn, and every single thing he did made it worse. Far worse. They enjoy and love governing when they’re squandering a strong economy. Now lets see what happens when they deal the death blow to an already foundering one.

Correct. To top it off, some of these "adults" polled are aliens, whose opinions on the issues here should be irrelevant.

The U.S. unemployment rate is at a stubbornly high 9.5 20.5 percent and Obama has spent much of the year on issues like Wall Street reform golfing, and healthcare vacations in addition to Government jobs.

There fixed it.
