Chevy Volt to cost $41,000 before rebate (ObamaMobile goes on sale)

The Chevrolet Volt, the first mass-market electric vehicle from General Motors Co., will have a sticker price starting at $41,000 when it hits showrooms later this year.
But government tax credits and rebates designed to speed the entry of electric vehicles into the marketplace will make the price more attractive. There's a federal tax credit of $7,500 for electric vehicles. That lowers the Volt price to $33,500. An earlier report factored in an additional $5,000 credit for Californians, which would have brought the price to $28,500, but GM said the Volt will not be included in the state's special rebate program.
The sticker price of the hybrid Toyota Prius, the current favorite of gasoline misers and eco-drivers, ranges from $22,150 to $28,820, depending on the trim level and equipment.

That wouldn’t cost you anywhere near $41k would it? You could also put the best stereo system in, built-in GPS, ABS braking system, computer diagnostics for all mechanical functions and lots more. With a few $k left for gasoline I would think.

Havent test driven one, so I am not sure if I would like it...heard they can be annoying when the transmission shifts.
Consider the Hyundai Sonata. Just bought a 2011 model and the 39mpg amazed me as well as the comfort and standard amenities. It’s a real fuel sipper.

No silly - you just mount the optional windmill on the roof
Terrible advice. I mounted a windmill on mine and totalled the car forgetting the height of overpasses. You didn’t say anything about height.

Hey, man, I just got 17.2 mpg on a 5,820 mile round trip to California from Knoxville, TN in my 2010 Navigator, AC running at 69 all the way.

I got the Limited highest end version w/navagation, extended warrantee to 100,000 bumper to bumper and also bought a service contract to cover up to 50,000 miles of maintenance = About $32,000 out the door after California tax and license. It could be my last car so I loaded it up and wanted bumper to bumper coverage for 10 years at least. They won’t deal much on the 2011 Sonata. I could have gotten a better deal on the 2010 but didn’t car for the 2010.

I beg to differ. Actually the early adopters will be much smarter and better educated than most of the people on this post. The Volt and its EREV technology are revolutionary new technology. GM will only make 10,000 Volts the first year and 30,000 the second year. Yes the first units are going to be expensive. That's true with any new technology. Remember the first Pocket Calculators, Computers, Wall TV's, Cell Phones? It's the same concept. There is a $7,500 rebate for the earlier adopter so the $41K is actually $33.5K. Even at the rate the Volt will easily sell out an there will be a waiting list. It will be the car to have and many will pay over sticker to get one. As GM ramps up production, the price WILL come down.
Also the price of gasoline will likely skyrocket in the next few years so by about 2012-3, we will likely be paying $5-6/gal. A lot of those people bragging about their 2002 Camaros and the like will be really hurting when they need to take a trip. The cost of electricity will be a bargain my comparison.
There are going to be a lot of people eating crow concerning the Volt and EREV technology in general.
