Sounds like an argument for the death penalty to me.

Yes, abolish life sentences and replace them with the death penalty.

“model behavior over the past 10 years” - Doesn’t matter. it was his behavior 43 years ago that counts.
“advanced age” - it is LIFE in prison. that includes when the prisoner is old.
“poor health” - His health is better than his victims.
“little likelihood of engaging in criminal behavior” - so what. He is in jail for what he has done, not what he might do...

This movement has been underway for at least 20 years.
Violent offenders with life sentences should serve them.

“The lifelong warehousing of physically and mentally broken down old men shouldn’t be as well.”
Being “physically and mentally broken down” doesn’t change anything, and damn sure doesn’t bring their victims back.

OK so when they get old and infirm enough to no longer be a threat outside, Give them the option of facing their victims descendents in unarmed combat, or the pill to put them to sleep forever.
Under NO circumstances should they be released (whatever happened to the Lockerbie bomber anyway? Has he died yet?)

Question...are we talking about life, or life without the possibility of parole? Not sure from the article...if it's the former, then a life sentence always has the implicit possibility of parole, based upon the prisoner's subsequent behavior and action, and the parole board.
If it's life without parole theya re now tryign to circumvent.., then it would be interesting to cite the arguments of those who oppose the death penalty..they often state that life behind bars is WORSE than the death penalty..

I suspect that at 77, skimping to try to make the social security check last through the month would be a step down from federal prison where everything is provided for. He would probably prefer to stay in the pen...

This is a very dangerous argument, at least to Catholics. Right now, the Catholic Church condemns the practice of capital punishment because we have other means to permanently remove deserving offenders from the public. If you introduce the idea that there should be no life imprisonment, you re-introduce the practical need for capital punishment to the Catholics
