Mark Murray writes: The Charleston Daily Mail (WV) reports that GOP Rep. Shelley Moore Capito won't run in the special election for Robert Byrd's Senate seat, side-stepping what would have been a competitive contest against Gov. Joe Manchin (D), who is running for the seat.

You’re probably right - however I have been referring to the fact that WV has begun to lean pretty heavily towards the GOP in federal elections. It just so happens that Byrd and Rockefeller have had a death grip on the state.
The Mike Huckabee analogy is a good one - it reminds me why I detested his candidacy so much. And I happen to be pro-life, pro-gun, and all that.....I just despise big-government “compassionate conservatism”. That brand of Republicanism is what cost us so dearly in 2006 and 2008.
At least WV didn’t vote for Zer0.
When Cuomo got his start, it wasn’t as a liberal. Matter of fact, he was fighting a liberal REPUBLICAN administration.
WV votes RAT locally and will continue to do so as long as the WV GOP continues on its corrupt course of being happy to be back-benchers, taking what crumbs the RATS throw their way.
good luck in your state....
there is NO HOPE for mine.
I have lived here all my 61 years and never knew of Cuomo the elder as a conservative of any kind...sure you had RINO Nelson Rockafeller as gov. back in the 70s and 60s, but I dont remember Mario as doing anything but try to make things MORE LIBERAL than rockefeller and he proved it....
I was talking about the Corona Fighting 69 that he helped against the first Lindsey Admin....that’s where he got his start.
Politics is always wheels within wheels. Some call me a conspiracy nut, but the truth is that politics is nothing BUT a collection of conspiracies.
BTW....born under LaGuardia-left under Bloomberg.
he was a great big gummint POS....even the title RINO for him would connote something more conservative that he was....he gave away the city.
Well, if Capito was gonna run half-a$$ed, we’re better off with her not running. John Raese (who nearly beat Rockefeller back in 1984) wants to run, and will run as an unabashed conservative.
In a most improbable development, former SOS Ken Hechler is challenging Manchin in the primary.
Hechler turns 96 in September. That may, in fact, make him the oldest person ever to seriously compete in a party primary (Strom was 93 in his last primary run in 1996).
No, people in WV are permanently precommitted to Democrat nominees but for some reason did not like Gore, Kerry, and Obama. They may be reconciled to Obama in 20012, as they were to Dukakis in 1988.
Why did J.V. Lindsay die a pauper? Didn’t he die in FL?
Nutty old coot. I wonder if he still has his driver’s license.
Who was the oldest incoming Senator?
Raese won’t get 32%. He’s a worse 3 time loser than Keyes, and has 3 times the ego to go along with it. Raese will even hurt the ticket down ballot. Worst choice possible. I hope someone else runs.
And this William Sims had a distinguished academic record. I am unsure if he was really part of the FL KKK. The people who removed his name were all Perry appointees to the UT regents.
Thanks, I was close, SC but not FL.
One would think a person like John V. Lindsay would have made sure he had insurance. What about Medicare? Didn’t he have that? He voted for it in 1965, a few months before he was elected mayor. He was truly part of the NY blueblood class.
Vliet was always a poser. He tried to fashion himself a part of the wealthy, trendy liberal elite (and the party establishment that forced out the last bonafide Conservative from that House district, Fred Coudert, in favor of him was happy to go along with that image), but he was never what his image made him out to be (except for the liberal part). In a lot of ways, he was the Caucasian counterpart of Zero, someone who had an ultraliberal record in DC with zero executive skills thrust into the most important Mayorship in the country - second in visibility only to the President (the job he truly coveted, for which he was using the Mayor’s office as a stepping-stone), and willfully played off the extremes (very rich/very poor) against the center and nearly destroyed NYC in the process.
I have written up an “oldest list” for the House and Senate, but I haven’t put it up on Wikipedia, yet (my counterpart to the “youngest” which I also did and is up), but I didn’t note who was the oldest freshman “elected” to begin a regular 6-year term (who managed to serve the whole term). I’d have to check partial terms to find out (although I think was probably MD Democrat William Pinkney Whyte who was just short of 82 when he was appointed and elected, but he died before completing it — and Whyte had served on and off for the prior 40 years, so he wasn’t a true newcomer). Frank Lautenberg was almost 79 when he began his current tenure in 2003 (after 2 years out). Strom Thurmond, of course, was the oldest elected to a full term at a month short of 94 which took him to 100. The oldest appointed Senator was Georgia’s Rebecca Latimer Felton at 87, but hers was a “stunt” appointment, lasting a single day just to set a record for her to be the oldest and first woman to serve in the Senate.
I take it that it must have been the horse’s head in his bed?
