Ex-Georgia secretary of state Karen Handel has nabbed a spot in the Republican runoff for governor.
With 64 percent of precincts reporting, unofficial returns show Handel had 32 percent of the vote. Her candidacy has been buoyed by the backing of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
There was a furious three-way battle behind her for the second runoff spot.
Former U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal had 25 percent of the vote. Former state Sen. Eric Johnson had 19 percent of the vote, while state Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine had 18 percent.
They were among seven Republicans vying for their party's nomination. A runoff is needed if no candidate wins 50 percent plus one vote.
The runoff winner will face Democratic winner Roy Barnes in the fall.

A dear friend of mine has known Deal for 20 years (CPA in Gainesville, knows all the details of the so-called ethics scandal) and supports him completely as a Christian, as a leader and as a husband and father (knows all the kids too and they are role models). Voted for him based on that alone. Personally, when Deal speaks, he sounds to me too much like a career pol - everything is very careful and very general. Will vote for him again in the runoff because of the personal recommendation. That trumps my perception based on media appearances. Have a great week Freepers!
Sorry, meant to add about the ethics thing, there is absolutely nothing there. Totally spite from Pelosi and her friends on the ethics committee.
Unfortunately, exercising our vote is usually about picking the least objectionable candidate available in order to advance your views. I wish it were otherwise.
Same here - I am aware that perfect is the enemy of the good. So I’ll vote for whoever wins, against Barnes.
It still bothers me, though. We shouldn’t even be here talking about this today. There’s no excuse for this. Not here. Not in this political climate. NONE
I hope other conservative states are paying attention to what just happeend in GA - if blue states are going to elect RINOs we sure do the red states to elect conservatives, or we are in really big trouble come November.
Pan - I wonder too if Handel will even debate Barnes since she was afraid to share a stage with McBerry. Hubby says if she had a foot to stand on, she could have mopped the floor with McBerry.
Is this kind of “leadership” she will provide against Obama? Will she go toe to toe with him? We need our governor, more than every, ready to stand up against tyranny. They need to be ready for law suits, all the way to war. Based on this campaign she sure doesn’t appear to me to be much of a fighter - she surfed in on endorsements.
Then you have Deal, who is a good man and good conservative but I fear Barnes’ crew will tie him to Bush and the economy. Either way it worries me. Johnson and/or Chapman were clear and free of the baggage, experienced, ready to fight, equipped with solid plans. Johnson has the best illegal immigration plan of anyone anywhere since GA has more illegals than even AZ. I really believe we needed that more than ever.
I will have to let this go and focus on November. I pray we do better next time.
I’ve been hearing that about the ethics complaint lately. That’s why I didn’t mention it. Thanks for the added recommendation.
Re: 5, I love that!!
I need to do some more research on Handel and the voting rights issues. It looks like she caved to the DOJ about not clearing the voter rolls, but I need to make sure I have the facts straight.
I don't think that's it. Handel and Haley were both well back in the polling field before Sarah's endorsements. Also, she's endorsing the primary opponent of Lisa Murkowski in AK. If "electability" were the goal, she'd stay with Murkowski, for sure. I regret not being up to date, but what's the beef with Handel?
Handel is a Social lib??? Sources please???
For starters she did not get the Georgia Right to Life endorsement.
“In fact, state and federal law prohibits the use of taxpayer funds for abortions or abortion related services and I strongly support those laws”
Then she obviously doesn’t know about Obama’s executive order to fund international abortions.... that’s one issue she’s wrong on....
That's a good point. I do not think Handel is insufficiently conservative. But possibly she might not be a very savvy politician.
She better bring her A game for King Roy the rat should she win the runoff.
See 101. This meshes with what I’ve heard about Deal.
