(CNN) -- A school district in Mississippi has agreed to pay a recent high school graduate $35,000 in damages and adopt a policy prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, according to a statement released Tuesday by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The settlement comes after the ACLU sued the school district in Fulton, Mississippi, on behalf of Constance McMillen, a lesbian teen who was told by Itawamba Agricultural High School officials she and her girlfriend would be ejected if they attended the school-sponsored prom.

Cha-CHING!!!
This country is going to hell in a handbasket.
We have seriously lost our way.
push polling lame stream
I suspect she'd take the $35K over the prom any day.
My date cancelled on me the day of the prom. I want $35,000!!
In the legal profession we call this a nusience settlement. It would have cost more than $35,000 in legal fees to successfully defend the suit. They got out the cheapest way possible.
This school district sought to protect the "privacy" of the other students ~ very simple matter. If that same lesbian had attended in proper dress with 5 other dateless girls there'd been no problem. Instead, she wanted a "partner".
So can someone bring their bi-sexual, polygamist girl and boyfriend next time for a 3-way prom date?
The district got off cheap by only having to shell out $35,000 of which I’m sure most went to the ACLU.
Stop having extracurricular activities, if that is the price for not giving into sexual perversion. Make a no romantic or sexual contact rule for everyone while on school property.
The first disagreement will be fought in court.
What about the trainwreck of a prom experience she made for the other 200 kids? Do they each get to claim emotional damages too?
They will “never get their prom back” either you know...having had it eclipsed by some dysnfunctional attention seeking lost soul.
Ridiculous.....When will the courts get this right...You do not have permission to deliberately disrupt a prom.
Absolutely and utterly insane.
After seeing her payoff I wouldn’t be surprised if a least a few of her classmates followed suit and filed suit.
And when she marries a male and has two natural born kids, will she have to give the money back with interest?
