In the usual garden variety "racism" that was impetus for that obscenity "Affirmative Action", the "Man" didn't hire the black guy because the "Man" prefered to work with whites. IOW, it is a sin for a person to arbitrarily choose the criteria in who they wish to associate. In the case of Sherrod, it wasn't a matter of not wanting to associate with a white person, there was malice in her heart, there was a chip on her shoulder and she wanted to show the guy who was the boss.
