GOP Sees Path to Control of Senate
Wall Street Journal ^ | JULY 18, 2010, 9:20 P.M. ET | NAFTALI BENDAVID

WASHINGTON—Democrats for the first time are acknowledging that Republicans could retake the Senate this November if everything falls into place for the GOP, less than two years after Democrats held a daunting 60-seat majority.

Leaders of both parties have believed for months that Republicans could win the House, where every lawmaker faces re-election. But a change of party control in the Senate, where only a third of the members are running and Republicans must capture 10 seats, seemed out of the question.

That's no longer the case. The emergence of competitive Republican candidates in Wisconsin, Washington and California—Democratic-leaning states where polls now show tight races—bring the number of seats that Republicans could seize from the Democrats to 11.

Democrats now control the Senate 59-41—after the death of Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who was replaced by Republican Sen. Scott Brown—including two independents who usually vote with them. That means Republicans need 10 seats to take a 51-49 advantage.

Republicans would have to win virtually every competitive race to retake the Senate, without losing any seats of their own—clearly an uphill climb. The trouble for Democrats is that many trends are against them. Surveys show that Republicans are more motivated than Democrats to go to the polls, and that voters are looking for new leadership in Congress.

"I think there is definitely a chance" of losing the Senate, said Democratic strategist Gary Nordlinger, a Washington-based media consultant. "I wouldn't call it a probability, but there is certainly a chance."

"Republicans still have to [win] all the competitive races in order to get to a majority, but at least there are enough seats on the table to pull it off," said Nathan Gonzales, political editor of the non-partisan Rothenberg Political Report.

Ahh no. I do not listen to anything like that. Actually two on my favorite bands were The Ramones (leader and guiraist was a huge Repub and Reagan fan) and Sex Pistols (libertarians and anti- the British Labour Party).

I will not gove money to people who are destroying America.

Keep watching TV and supporting the regime. Serfdom awaits.

“Frantzie has a mysterious grudge against Cable,”

His grudge holds some merit. If cable were a la carte, there is ZERO way some of these idiotic news channels/specialty shows would exist. Nobody would buy them. It’s kind of like how PBS would probably not exist if it weren’t for public funding.

I have Fios TV. I look at the channels I watch vs. what I have and cannot believe half of the garbage I am funding. I basically pay for a Bill Mahrer (or however you spell that idiot’s name) outlet. I support his right to say whatever the hell he wants no matter how idiotic, but I *pay* him to say it.

I won’t be funding that garbage after my contract expires (well, maybe some of the “internet” portion of my bill will still fund it ... who knows). I’ll just deal with whatever is coming over the air and get some online services for entertainment.

“and Sex Pistols (libertarians and anti- the British Labour Party).”

You do know Johnny Lydon has taken a step off the deep end since those days, right? Regardless, I still love “Nevermind the Bullocks ... “ :-). I never was a huge Ramones fan, but to each their own :-).

I know, I was just messin' with ya. And yes, it was silly. Liberals are the kings of double-standards. The thing that aggrevated me the most about 2001 is that the Republicans with a Republican VP held a 50-49 advantage over the Democrats (1 Independent), yet Democrats still got half of all the committee seats. And as soon as Jeffords betrayed the GOP leaving 49 Republicans, 49 Democrats, and 2 Independents, Democrats suddenly gained a two-member advantage in all committees.

Democrats do not play fair - ever. Republicans need never forget that.

Between Scott Brown, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, John McCain, and Lindsey Graham, the ‘Pubbies will NEVER control the Senate. They will always have one or more Senators ready to sell them out.

John Lydon is a capitalist living in Malibu. His wife of many years is a German publishing heiress. He does not say he is a Repub but he said nice things about Newt back when Newt had The Contract for America not The Contract *On* America. Newt is an a*s now.

Well The Ramones pretty much invented punks though some may say Iggy and the Stooges or MC5. Johnny was a great guitarist and they influenced The Pistols, Undertones and many many groups. Johnny aka John Cummings was a HUGE Repub and Reagan fan.

Perfect 2009 ACU Rating of 100:

BARRASSO

BURR

COBURN

CORNYN

DeMINT

ENSIGN

ENZI

INHOFE

THUNE

VITTER

Eight of the ten listed above on ACU kind of blows up your theory, wouldn’t you agree?

“Great charts. The GOP should use them.”

Perot had the right idea, with his charts and warning about annual and cumulative debt.

Although he was too flakey to stay focused, he shook up the system, setting the stage for the GOP to get Clinton onboard for balanced budgets.

Had GW Bush held firm, he could have left office with far less debt.

As it was, Bush opened the door for the dems runaway deficits, and made it more difficult for the GOP to say, with straight faces, they stand for balanced budgets.

But if every GOP candidate shows the charts, and pledges balanced budgets, I think they can win resoundingly.

No, it doesn't. The ACU rates them on legislation that is brought up for a vote. That may make some think tank happy but that doesn't do anything to dismantle our bloated and broken system. They play the game as conservatives but they still play the game. Until Republicans start voting 'NO' on all the unconstitutional garbage they authorize and fund then they are not conservatives. Want to tell me none of them have ever voted yes on one of our glorious federal budgets?

Maybe in the ether that clouds all thinking inside the beltway they are the most conservative choices. But through the filter of the constitution they are all big government socialists.

This is going to make Florida interesting. If Crist wins as an independent then who will he caucus with - Republicans or Democrats? Probably which ever party offers him the better deal.

Crist will go Democrat. They always bribe better than the GOP. They understand the lust for power and know how to feed it in others.
