Steve Niro got married in 1981 at age 23 and divorced less than five years later. At the time of the divorce, he and his wife were in their late 20s, and both were working. Niro remarried nearly 15 years ago, but hes still paying his alimony.
Two years ago, Niros youngest son graduated from college, ending child support payments and leaving his former wife with alimony of $65 a week. The next thing I know, I get summonsed to court for alimony adjustment, he says. A probate court judge increased the alimony to $700 a week even though the couple had divorced nearly a quarter of a century ago five times longer than they were married.
I paid child support. I paid college. I was never late. I fulfilled my obligations, says Niro, 52, a Milford native who works for an environmental engineering firm in Portland, Maine. I just have to hope that legislators in Massachusetts have enough sense to pass a law that puts guidelines on alimony because the courts dont exercise any common sense or logic.
Niro and other men and women like him say the states alimony law is archaic, reflecting an era when women kept house and men provided. Today, with women making up nearly half the workforce, they say alimony should be a temporary boost, not a lifetime subsidy.

On the other side, my mother, who back in my childhood seems to have been a leftist — and really wanted the divorce from my father — had some commie woman lawyer do the divorce — no alimony — minimal child support, no medical,no dental, no school, no nothing. And still my father complained bitterly that he had been taken to the cleaners. My mother worked 2 jobs to pay for my braces, to send me to private school.
I thought she made a big mistake in the divorce.
Are there many single Aussie women?
No argument here.
lack of consequences has emboldened many a jurist.
There seem to be but I’ve got 30years to life with my wife so I don’t scan the horizons 2 much.

The more people like you we can get the better! Adelaide and the Sunshine Coast in Queensland are great too!
Good for you!
Nice - thanks for the info!
I’ve never known anyone who paid alimony. Child support yes but not alimony.
Maybe I’ve just led a sheltered life.
DH and I are now in our 45th year of marriage. So, I guess we could qualify for “Leave it to Beaver”. He married me after the first louse hit me, cheated, and took drugs. He adopted my two babies after the first louse quit paying child support, and cancelled the health insurance on the babies.
We had two more children together, and worked at our marriage. Now he has Parkinson’s, and I am his caregiver. We have so many happy memories together. I never worked outside the home, but did help him with his business, for no pay.
We aren’t perfectly “suited to one another”, but we believe in respecting each other, and putting up with each other’s idiosyncrasies.
Love is a verb.
Beautiful!!! Nice to see success!!!
Prayers for your husband’s condition.
Still possibly the best option.
I say that's a joke son.
All leftism is driven by envy. It’s not quite that they want to be married. They want to destroy traditional marriage and turn it into a joke of what it once was.
Conservatives like myself who believe in family values do believe in divorce. My wife doesn’t either. It is not an option in our family. Do you realize that in three generations not ONE family member has divorced. If you don’t believe in divorce you won’t do it. Divorce is because the couple is selfish and spoiled and decide they want to go out and have fun. It STUNS me how many so called conservatives believe in divorce. I just don’t understand it!!!!!!
You have my sympathies.
If I were Palladin, you’d have my services;-)
Some women give the rest of us a bad name.
Divorce is a French word, invented by French lawyers because of French metrosexuals.
Closing the barn door after the horse has left and been attacked by a pack of coyotes and left to rot in the sun for a week. Sane people simply aren't going to take the risk of marriage anymore. Nor should they given the disincentives.
Ditto ..... They couldn't believe every penny would stop and I'd go to prison over alimony.

He was taking advantage of her. The last straw is when he got divorced the second time, and was using her money to pay his support on the second family. Absolute scum.
God Bless You that is heart warming.
I know I shouldn't laugh because it's not funny what you are going through. But, you still made it FUNNY (in a way)!
