Expo president statement

Indiana Black Expo President and CEO Tanya Bell released the following statement late Saturday night:

“As our community celebrates 40 years of having one of the largest African-American events in the country, we are saddened by the reported incidents that occurred downtown this evening. Fortunately, none of the incidents resulted in life threatening injuries. We are still waiting to hear if the incidents were related and who was involved.

This happened at an event called “Black Expo?” Sorry, but I’m past feigning surprise at this kind of news.

Follow-up article says there was another shooting after these and one more “victim”.

Are you sure this wasn’t a Future Farmers of America convention?? / sarc.

Well, it seems someone has a grip on reality. Does anyone know anything more about the minister Norvel Terry to whom the following quotes are attributed?

“Well, we have to throw it back out there, we have to throw it, we have to say it is our kids, you know, the police department did their jobs tonight,” said minister Norvel Terry. “Our kids, they have just lost their minds. Let's keep it real.”

(snip)

“Your kids are coming out here with these guns, they are coming to downtown Indianapolis, shooting up the city like it is the OK Corral and if you think that is right and you are blaming the police for what the police [are] doing, something is not right,” Terry said. “It starts with the young kids. Everybody wants to blame the police. It ain't the police, it is the kids.”

The only time I ever had to draw my concealed carry piece was on a business trip to Indianapolis.

Just a comment on the idea of a "Black" Expo.

In America's cauldron of mixes of heritage and racial backgrounds I can think of none that celebrate based on color. There is no "Yellow" Expo for the Chinese, no "Red" Expo for the American Indian descendants, not even a "White" expo for those of the Caucasian race. Do the olive-toned Greeks have an "Olive American" festival?

Sure, we have our festivals, holidays, celebrations that might be mindful to heritage...such as Chinese New Years, and St. Patrick's day, that the Irish (and those who wish they were Irish, LOL)celebrate, but the day has nothing to do with excluding any race such as a "Black" expo does.

There is the Black Caucus in Congress, a Miss Black America Contest (no whiteys allowed to compete, of course) the NAACP - which seems to only represent Black interests anymore and not people of all colors, and even Black Businessmens' clubs. So, just who are the racists?????

When these organizations become equally populated by people of all races, and remove the word "Black" from their names, then our country can move forward and the constant reminder of racism, and the hatred it spawns, will fade. Not until then, and anyone living today should not hold their breath.

And, I don't lump all Blacks into the category of African-Americans either. A large part of the Black population never had one relative with a foot in Africa. Many were from islands or other locations.

This has been brewing for several years with this annual Black Expo thing in Indy. It’s been a thugfest for a while. A couple years ago the attendees were just parking their cars anywhere, double parked, no parking zones, in front of fire hydrants, etc., and when they got parking tickets they started screaming “racism” to the high hills for being treated just like everyone else.

About 15 years ago, another major incident happened during the Indiana Black Expo. A mini-riot broke out on 38th Street at Illinois Ave. Businesses were looted and innocent people beaten. The police quickly cordoned off the area and riot was stopped within an hour. The overhead shots from news helicopters resembled the riots in LA.

This riot was started by the Black Panthers (or another black radical group) Why?? They were upset that the Black Expo was having a positive impact in the black community and the entire city. They wanted it stopped. A rep of this group was interviewed. He was grinning ear to ear and gleeful and proud that the riot happened. What did the Black Expo do?? Nothing. They have not prevented other black groups, even ones with bad reputations, from coming to and even associating with the Black Expo. Race comes first it seems and everything else does not really matter.

I don’t know what happened last night. Was it gang related? I would not be surpriced. Also, the “gangsta” rap music glorifies violence like this. But sadly, the Black Expo has alot of responsibility in not distancing itself from extreme radical groups but rather stay affiliated with them. Black Expo’s silence over the years has condoned this behavior.

the shooting victims include a 16-year-old who was shot in the buttocks, an 18-year-old shot in the lower leg and a 10-year-old who was shot in the thigh.

Sounds like poor firerarms training in this community. All those low shots suggest that “flinching” by shooters is epidemic.
