Arizona's not alone.
Five states have introduced similar immigration laws since The Grand Canyon State passed controversial legislation that is scheduled to kick in on July 29, according the Los Angeles Times.
The number of immigration-based laws and resolutions supported by states has increased by more than 10 times in recent years.
"Lawmakers are frustrated with federal inaction," Ann Morse, a program director with the National Conference of State Legislatures told the newspaper. "Until the federal government acts, states will still see this as an area where they see the need to play a leadership role."
The group says officials in five statesMichigan, South Carolina, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Rhode Islandhave introduced similar immigration laws to Arizona's.
The legislation, which has sparked protests by civil rights and religious groups, mandates that immigrants carry documentation of their status. It also requires police to question people about their immigration status if the cops have "reasonable suspicion."
Critics say the law could lead to racial profiling. Supporters argue the law is necessary because the federal government hasn't done enough to curb illegal immigration.
A federal judge began hearing arguments last week over whether the law should be enacted later this month as scheduled. There are seven challenges in total, including one by the U.S. Department of Justice, to the law.
Several states already have their own regulations regarding illegal immigrants. Colorado bars undocumented workers from obtaining in-state tuition. In Tennessee, knowingly presenting a fake ID to get a job is illegal. And in Nebraska officials must confirm immigration status in order to receive public benefits.
And more Americans wouldn't mind an Arizona-like immigration law in their own state, according to a recent Quinnipiac poll. Voters said by 48% to 35% that they'd support similar legislation.
Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute predicted the Arizona law would be a factor in the November elections.
"The Arizona immigration law has emerged as a major divide in the country, but the numbers are on the side of those supporting it," he said.
Arizona Republican Gov. Jan Brewer's controversial immigration law is being copied by five states.
To begin with....
Rebellion is Brewering!!
Unfortunately, NV won’t be able to try this until Reid is out of power, since he’s turned a blind eye to all the illegals working in the construction jobs here. My friend’s husband, a union plumber, has been unemployed for seven months, while the contruction on HR projects just keeps going.
The ads he has been playing using his opponent concerning jobs, Medicare and others of his pet ram bills have cut off her statements to the point that they make no sense at all. HR needs to sit down and shut up.
We NEED immigration laws, and if the feds won’t do it, then the states MUST, and we need to keep the Militia busy.
Oooohhh!! Here’s a thought: Use captured illegals to help build the wall, then deport them when the wall is done... ;o]
The cheeky Kenyan bastard will not be able to set foot in those states. He will be arrested.
Who says the “citizens” who have been “gunned down” aren’t illegal?
“Arizona Republican Gov. Jan Brewer’s controversial immigration law is being copied by five states.”
Good!
One thing...Jan Brewer saw the writing on the wall and got the nerve to sign the bill, but it wasn’t ‘her’ bill. We have to thank Russell Pearce and the AZ legislature for that.
“Unfortunately, NV wont be able to try this until Reid is out of power, since hes turned a blind eye to all the illegals working in the construction jobs here.”
Angle and everyone is Nevada needs to throw this in Harry’s face!
Good old Harry...how I WISH the illegal alien population of Nevada knew what he REALLY thinks about them.....worse than anything EVER said by a Tea Party participant!
Harry Reid: illegal aliens free loaders and scam artists
OH! THE IRONY!
From John Lollipop..
Reid, now an impassioned champion of amnesty for 20 million illegal aliens in America, once called illegal aliens free loaders and scam artists which he proposed to deal with in his Immigration Stabilization Act in the United States Senate in 1993. That proposed legislation was introduced to the floor of the US Senate with the following press release, in part, issued by Reids office on August 5, 1993. In response to increased terrorism and abuse of social programs by aliens, (I) today introduced the first and only comprehensive immigration reform bill in Congress. Currently, an alien living illegally in the United States often pays no taxes but receives unemployment, welfare, free medical care, and other federal benefits. Recent terrorist acts, including the World Trade Center bombing, have underscored the need to keep violent criminals out of the country.

Jan, I love ya, but do something about that eye.......!!
Militant
He’s so crooked he’ll have to be corkscrewed into his grave.
I’ve emailed him, and told him to stop his lying, stop his stealing, and remember that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Then I told him that unless he could give me a reasonable personal email (not a flim-flam copy) that I would continue to pray for his political demise. You should have seen the trash I got from him.
(He is LDS but he is such a *shudder* corrupt example that I’m embarrassed for anyone who trusts him.) His son Rory is running for governor of NV and I hate to think what the state will have to pay if that happens. Rory and Harry are both so corrupt and into so many pay-offs and schemes that it’s a wonder they haven’t been sued to the hilt before now.
I should email him again, since he seems to have blown me off. But then...if I get too vocal, I may see black helicopters over my house...
“One thing...Jan Brewer saw the writing on the wall and got the nerve to sign the bill, but it wasnt her bill. We have to thank Russell Pearce and the AZ legislature for that.”
Zackly! And her support of McAmnesty is very disconcerting.
I’m surprised this is happening in MI and MN.
“Zackly! And her support of McAmnesty is very disconcerting.”
Indeed! I didn’t see Brewer standing up against illegal immigration before this, did you?
Come to find out, it appears that he's a crook too! What a hoot! The report accused him of stealing toys from a toy drive for children and giving them to his own extended family's kids? The boy is a real piece of work. The judge needs to toss him and his lawsuit out of court.
Are we now going to hear the incessant drumbeat call of racism? Will the rest of the states begin to mount an economic boycott of MI, SC, MN, PA, RI? Are there any big time sports events in the future for any of these states, are people going to demand they be moved to another site? Is the DOJ going to advance lawsuits on these spots now too??
Especially with Minneapolis being a “sanctuary
city”. The femboy mayor Rybak will have a fit.
now all those states need to stop wasting money deporting the illegals and instead just bus them to the nearest sanctuary city in a nearby state, give the liberals there what they want
The wall should be partially costructed out of illegal’s cars...crushed into cubes.
