Sorry, couldn't fit the entire title.

It appears that there was some sort of explosion and subsequent fire. It sounds like the man survived the explosion but was killed in the fire.

Would this be considered a hate crime?

Just as an aside, in my youth, before the creation of Interstate highways (I-75), my family wold use U.S. 127 to go from the Cincinnati are to northern Michigan. Then we took the ferry - pre-Mackinaw Bridge days. Ahh the memories...:)

What did this man do for a living?

Didn’t some state employee in Tennessee (?) who was selling visas to Arabs get killed in a car fire under mysterious circumstances about 5 yrs ago?

It may simply be a horrible accident (leaking brake fluid or something similar). But I’d suspect he pulled off because he sensed that something was wrong, couldn’t find the problem, and then when he started up to go back on the road, it was too late.

Several years back A couple of Detroit Muslims set fire to a storefront mosque in coldwater michigan. During their arson attempt, they apparently set themselves on fire.

Some 4 hours later they flagged down a cop in Jackson and gave him some story about two black men setting them on fire. Both lingered in the hospital for several days before dying.

I hadn’t thought about it but it is possible.

I read about a local meth head getting arrested for cooking meth in a gas station bathroom some months back.

Looks like it may be a bizarre suicide. Apparently the guy was going to be arrested for child molesting.
