WASHINGTON — Religious leaders and lawmakers traded Scripture passages Wednesday at a congressional hearing on whether there's an ethical imperative to overhaul the nation's immigration laws.

Arguing for a comprehensive immigration package with a guest-worker program, Richard Land , the president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission , quoted from Matthew, Leviticus and Micah in pressing for action on the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants currently living in the U.S.

I don’t think that Jesus had a position on every political issue.

He was a busy fellow in his short stay and had to entrust to his disciples the mission of redemption and salvation of mankind.

Gosh! I wonder what God would do if someone got past St. Peter at the pearly gate. Why, I bet that could never happen. St. Peter is way too good at protecting Heaven’s borders. Don’t you think?

I’ll tell you what. When God opens heaven to all comers, I’ll reconsider my position on national sovereignty.

The Bible shows many examples where not only is a nation allowed to defend itself against foreign invaders, God helps Israel to defend itself!

As a Southern Baptist, if my neighbor is an illegal alien and needed my help because he was starving, injured, sick, etc., I would help him recover from his problem...feed him, get him medical help... whatever... and then encourage him to return to his own country and then apply to enter the US legally. He is a human being and needs help. But he is also breaking the law and needs to make things right. If he refuses to stop violating the law, then it is my responsibility as a US citizen to report him to immigration.

Well there was the Gentile woman who asked for her daughter to be healed and Jesus responded “It's not meet to give the childrens bread to the dogs” (Jews bread to Gentiles)

The woman responded “Yes Lord but dont the dogs get the scraps off the masters table (faith and humility)” To which Jesus replied something like “Go your faith has made your daughter whole”

Joseph and Mary were on their way to Bethlehem as part of an effort to register for some sort of census/tax role. I imagine that Jesus would have been inclined to register via the proper channels of authority. As far as someone else registering,I have to suspect that a malicious narco-syndicate murder and an innocent peasent would have markey different experiences in confronting Jesus on the subject.

He wouldn't say anything...he was preaching about the Kingdom of God, not Caesar. But he didn't like taxes...He sent his men out fishing and the first fish they caught would have a coin in its mouth to pay the tax with...A big high 5 for the Lord...

Yes, but he didn’t choose sides. And most of all, he didn’t go on and on about Roman oppression, which was ubiquitous and brutal. Compare that to the social gospel Christians promoting social justice. If Jesus had the mindset of today’s liberal he would have bashed the Roman Empire endlessly as imperialistic and fascist.

Politics was not His message. His message was salvation.

“What would Jesus do about illegal immigration? (Religious leaders & lawmakers trade Scripture)”

For every scripture quoted for illegals there is another against it.

THIS is NOT about Religion! It’s about the rule of law, and the Baptists, Mormon, Catholic, etc. ‘leaders’ better pull their heads out of their pious butts!
This is what ‘separation of church and state’ is supposed to be about.

Religious Leaders vs. Members: An Examination of Contrasting Views on Immigration

Poll: Pew and Pulpit Disagree on Immigration Zogby Survey Finds Religious Leaders and Members at Odds WASHINGTON (December 29, 2009) - In contrast to many national religious leaders who are lobbying for increases in immigration, a new Zogby poll of likely voters who belong to the same religious communities finds strong support for reducing overall immigration. Moreover, members strongly disagree with their leaders’ contention that more immigrant workers need to be allowed into the country. Also, most parishioners and congregants prefer more enforcement to cause illegal workers to go home, rather than legalization of illegal immigrants, which most religious leaders...

Perhaps he would have told the illegals, “Go, and sin no more”.

I sent them a message as well even though I am not a Baptist. I was really shocked to hear a leader of the Baptists, which I see as the last bastion of traditional America, caving in to this phony feel-goodism.

As to what would Jesus do?

The Bible is for law and order - Thou shalt not steal. The illegals are stealing our country a little at a time. What they are doing is squatting on our land which is a way of taking someones land away from them.

If large numbers of foreigners made inroads into ancient Israel the way that illegal aliens are entering into our country in great numbers, you can be sure that the Israelites would chase them away. God wanted the Israelites to be called out from among the nations and God promised the land of Israel to Abraham and his descendants. In other words, he wanted them to have their own nation. He didn't say that that land belonged to everybody.

Nationhood is just an extension of private property. We have our own property which is protected by the law. Every town and city has records of who owns what. There are precise measurements of every property and there are property markers between the lots. Nations also have bounder markers and laws protecting their territory.
