Idled Gulf Rigs Head For Africa

Commerce: What does it say about America’s investment climate when the Republic of Congo now attract oil rigs that once drilled the Gulf of Mexico? That’s the effect of the Obamaadministration’s nonstop bid to halt production here.

As millions were enjoying the World Cup last weekend, powerful engines began churning the waters of the Gulf of Mexico as Diamond Offshore Drilling began pulling its huge floating rig on a 60-day trip to the Republic of Congo.

Congo is hardly the place that springs to mind for the quality of its investment environment. But because of the Obama administration's nonstop efforts to halt offshore drilling through one executive order after another, that is now the reality.

On May 27, in the wake of the BP oil spill that began three weeks earlier, the Department of the Interior issued a blanket ban on all drilling deeper than 500 feet. When a federal judge threw that out as unjustified, the administration came right back with a new diktat that amounts to the exact same ban.

For rig companies, such pigheadedness gave the game away: The Obama administration is determined to halt offshore drilling by any means necessary. And for energy companies, the only rational response is to pull out.

"As the uncertainty about continued deep-water drilling in the (Gulf of Mexico) persists, we must consider alternatives that allow our deep-water assets to remain employed," Diamond Offshore's CEO, Larry Dickerson, explained in a press release.

About the worst thing you can do to a business climate is create uncertainty. How can anyone do Risk Management? Every day something can change -- regulations, lawsuits, tax policy, who knows?

Obama sure knows how to kill job growth. He's on that task 24/7.

when the Republic of Congo now attract oil rigs

They might just as well go somewhere with a relatively honest government.

I have never seen anyone so hell bent on destroying this country.

It’s almost enough to make you wish Hillary had been elected instead.

Considering how totally unprepared BP and presumably all the other majors are to handle a problem this big, I kind of want a little time spent making sure there is proper back-up for future potential accidents. While 6 months may be a bit long, since we don’t even know if BP’s latest effort will work, 60 days does not seem too long for planning and taking corrective steps.

Frankly I think everyone drilling in the Gulf should contributed to an Emergency Preparedness Fund, proportional to the riskiness and/or richness of their drilling activities. There should be a storage location near the Gulf, but hurricane protected, where equipment and material for emergency rapid deployment is kept.

NOTE: I own some BP stock and I am NOT pleased with them or the oil industry in general. Filing reports for Gulf drilling safety mentioning WALRUSES, get real!!! Years of MMS approvals for reports mentioning WALRUSES, oh my Gosh!!!

The difference between the US and Republic of Congo is that while one of them is run by a corrupt African dictator, the other one is actually located in Africa. </rimshot>
The sad part is even if the courts reject yet one more drilling moratorium, the effect is still the same. As another poster said, we'd probably be better off with the Hilderbeast.

no offense, but this is one issue you aren’t clear on! :P

This is being done ON PURPOSE. Creating chaos allows Obama and his gang of corrupt Chicago fabian socialists to usher in their socialist ideas. They do this under the guise that things are SO broken under the “old” system run by Republicans that the only answer is to accept what Obama has to offer to bring a bright and sunny future to all of Americans. The sad part is we have an electorate full of morons that buy into this utopia socialist bull crap.

Sorry I didn’t express myself well. I was trying to say that Obama is purposefully killing job growth, purposefully destroying the US and that he is working on this evil task 24/7.

The entire US oil industry contributes to such a fund and has for many years. Too bad this administration has spent so little of it for the clean up.

I'm curious if you thought the airline industry should have been shut down for 6 months following 9-11?

And if you don’t get approval to do anything when the blowout occurs, any plans mean nothing at all. You aren’t allowed to implement them, or to call in help.

Never mind. I just got what you meant.

I must be more tired that I realized. My train of thought really derailed on that one.
