Reuters/Ipsos Poll: Crist leads 3-way Senate race in Florida (Crist 35, Rubio 28, Meeks 17)

(Reuters) - Florida Governor Charlie Crist holds a narrow edge over Republican Marco Rubio in a three-way Senate race dominated by economic worries, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday.

Crist, who left the Republican Party to run as an independent after Rubio mounted a primary challenge against him, leads Rubio 35 percent to 28 percent. Democrat Kendrick Meek trails with 17 percent less than four months before the November election for the open Senate seat.

Crist holds a similar 34 to 29 percent edge over Rubio in a three-way race against Democrat Jeff Greene, who is locked in a tough party primary fight with Meek. The Florida primary will be held August 24.

In the race to succeed Crist as governor, Republican Rick Scott leads Democrat Alex Sink by 34 percent to 31 percent. But Sink leads slightly, 31 percent to 30 percent, when matched against Republican Bill McCollum. McCollum and Scott are waging a bitter Republican primary race.

While incumbents have faced a wave of voter anger in other states, a majority of Florida voters -- 53 percent -- approve of Crist's performance as governor and 41 percent disapprove. A 57 percent majority says Florida is on the right track.

"Generally incumbents have been at a disadvantage this year, but that hasn't been the case with Crist in Florida," Young said. "The move to running as an independent has paid off. He's capturing the middle space," said Ipsos pollster Cliff Young.

The Florida Senate battle is one of about a dozen crucial races that could decide whether Democrats hold their Senate majority and their ability to push President Barack Obama's legislative agenda.

I don’t believe this Reuters poll for a second, plus it is registered voters, not likely. That said, I am hoping Rubio starts doing something soon to stnd out in this race. He was so good early on, but seems flat lately.

Oh.

Not ‘likely’ voters.
A poll over the weekend, when most DemocRATS are at home.

Figures. A push poll.

Rubio and McCollum had it sewn up until they said they were against the AZ law or “it would not be good for Florida.”

Crist is a vile POS but I blame the open-borders FL RINO GOP.

With all the hatred of the Dems around the country - Rubio should be up by 20%. I wish FL had some Jan Brewers and not this RINO scum.

Floriduhians do not even know what is going on yet. Rassmussen has Rubio up among the voting population. And this is a Rueters poll way ove sampled Democrats and undocumented Democrats.

Rubio got caught between the SB1070 debate and the oil spill. The good news for him is that if ever you’re going to hit a low point in your campaign, the Summer is the best time for it to happen. He just needs to tread water and get ready for the final push in the Fall.

Here's my question --- Florida has a HUGE Hispanic population. How do the Hispanic voting population of Florida view the AZ law ? Are they against it or for it ?

If they are against it, I can understand why any politician would want to distance themselves from it.

Ummmm -- "Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish and the data were weighted to Florida's registered voter population according to U.S. Census figures." Whiskey-tango-foxtrot, is THAT something new????

I think you can see the answer in the polling data. Rubio lost a lot of white Floridians and McCollum will probably lose to Rick Scott. It is this issue.

The AZ law is supported by 70% of Americans. Rubio put La Familia and La Raza ahead of America. F him and MCCollum.

And how does Crist stand on this issue ? Is he for or against the Arizona law ?

I loathe Crist - he is a POS. I think he has not said a word on AZ. This is the one smart thing he has done and I cannot stand the freak. He is against any offshore drilling anywhere.

I will vote for Rubio but he is Mel Martinez 2. I think Rubio will win but the FL GOP like NY & TX is filled with open-border RINOs. Thank goodness for AZ.

I know Hispanics in AZ and NM are for it. Illegals bring high crime, and destruction of their neighborhoods.
I am not Hispanic, lived in a very nice established neighborhood. When our neighbors divorced, their house became a sort-of “safe house.” Persons coming and going, beer cans and trash in the yard, and the neighborhood locking up tight, and not feeling quite safe. No one, no one, wants that in their neighborhood.
I hate the term “hyphenated Americans”. Hispanics love America, their families, their neighborhoods, and have to same attitude towards illegals as us all.

Okay, I added the totals and got 80%...does that mean 20% undecided? Doesn’t this make this a rather useless poll?...magritte

Surely there’s some evidence somewhere of Charlie Crist compromising himself, yes? He’s made so many slimy moves, surely somebody has something on him. We must find it.
