When Valerie Jarrett was still in contention for the Senate seat in early November 2008, Rahm Emanuel called longtime Rod Blagojevich friend John Wyma.

Emanuel wanted Wyma to deliver a message to Blagojevich.

Wyma, a state lobbyist, just testified that Emanuel told him to call Blagojevich and express something on behalf of the President-Elect.

"He said the President-Elect would value and appreciate Valerie Jarrett in the Senate seat," Wyma said.

Wyma said he then tried to call Blagojevich at home but "missed him." He then called Blagojevich chief of staff John Harris.

Wyma said he passed on Emanuel's message. "I told him it would make sense to have Valerie as a pick," Wyma said.

Harris told him he would give the message "unabridged and unedited" to the then-governor.

The significance here is Wyma had been cooperating with the government for several weeks. He made a call on Emanuel's behalf at the time that the then-Governor was hoping to get something in return for the Senate seat. The week before that phone call, Blagojevich had expressed his interest in a cabinet position in exchange for the Senate seat.

While the prosecution played a recording of Robert Blagojevich's call to Wyma asking for funds from Children's Memorial Hospital, Wyma admitted to attorney Michael Ettinger that he didn't know whether Robert Blagojevich also knew that the hospital was at the same time seeking state monies.

Now Blagojevich's lawyer, Sheldon Sorosky is questioning Wyma: "You don't mind if I call you John, do you?

Wyma: "Do you mind if I call you Shelly?" He says to much laughter in the courtroom.

Sorosky: "Not at all."

Looks to me that if you are going to prosecute one fellow for dealing, you should kind of look at the other fellow for the same dealing. You pretty much have to lock them both up for the crime or let them both go if its not a crime.

Blagojevich defense attorney Sheldon Sorosky began their cross-examination of Wyma. Sorosky asked Wyma about his background.

Wyma said David Axelrod introduced Wyma to Blagojevich when he was in Congress, and Axelrod suggested Wyma be Blagojevich’s Congressional chief of staff. Wyma held the position for three and a half years and left on good terms with Blagojevich.

Wyma said he then went on to work for New York Senator Charles Schumer. Wyma left his job with Schumer to come back to Illinois in 2002 and work for Blagojevich’s gubernatorial primary campaign leading up to Blagojevich’s first term as governor.

In 2002, Sorosky asked if Wyma had any relationship with Mayor Daley; Wyma said no. When Sorosky tried to ask if Wyma had any relationship with Jesse Jackson, Jr. or if Blagojevich was Wyma’s political god father, the prosecution objected and the judge sustained.

Sorosky tried to ask Wyma if he ever asked Blagojevich for a position in his administration and about why went to work as a lobbyist, but the prosecution objected two both questions and the judge sustained.

Wyma said he opened his lobbying firm in spring 2003. Wyma explained a lobbyist works with companies on how to be “more effective” with the government regarding how legislative issues might affect their business.

When asked, Wyma testified he made “better than $1 million” in his first year with his lobbying firm.

And, I think that this green movement has to pursue those same steps and stages.

Right now we say we want to move from suicidal gray capitalism to something eco-capitalism where at least we’re not fast-tracking the destruction of the whole planet. Will that be enough? No, it won’t be enough. We want to go beyond the systems of exploitation and oppression all together. But, that’s a process and I think that’s what’s great about the movement that is beginning to emerge is that the CRISIS is so severe in terms of joblessness, violence and now ecological threats that people are willing to be both pragmatic and visionary.

So the green economy will start off as a small subset and we are going to push it and push it and push it until it becomes the engine for transforming the whole society.
