URBANA, Ill. -- The University of Illinois has fired an adjunct professor who taught courses on Catholicism after a student accused the instructor of engaging in hate speech by saying he agrees with the church's teaching that homosexual sex is immoral.
The professor, Ken Howell of Champaign, said his firing violates his academic freedom. He also lost his job at an on-campus Catholic center.
Howell, who taught Introduction to Catholicism and Modern Catholic Thought, says he was fired at the end of the spring semester after sending an e-mail explaining some Catholic beliefs to his students preparing for an exam.
"Natural Moral Law says that Morality must be a response to REALITY," he wrote in the e-mail. "In other words, sexual acts are only appropriate for people who are complementary, not the same."
An unidentified student sent an e-mail to religion department head Robert McKim on May 13, calling Howell's e-mail "hate speech." The student claimed to be a friend of the offended student. The writer said in the e-mail that his friend wanted to remain anonymous.

If this guy was teaching an introduction to Catholicism, wouldn’t it make sense to explain the church’s views on homosexuality?
That would be an academic exercise. It doesn’t demand that students have to agree with the stance. It just requires that they understand what the stance is.
I don’t know what the total exchange was, if there’s more to it than this, but this guy seems to have gotten railroaded here from what I’ve read here.
Like one of the posters said. Read The Pink Swastika.
My how KAFKA of the Illini.
Under the Romans, they threw Christians to the lions which ripped them apart and munched on their flesh.
Today, the pagans destroy your reputation and take away your ability to earn money.
Not much of an improvement, eh?
“If this guy was teaching an introduction to Catholicism, wouldnt it make sense to explain the churchs views on homosexuality?”
Yes. But not his views.
Then again, if there was a course on Marxism in 21st century America and the instructor exoressed his support for Marxism, he would get the same treatment.
HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Kidding. Sometimes I crack myself up.
IOW, he was fired for teaching what the course was about. If UI doesn't want students exposed to Catholic belief, then why have a course on it in the first place?
The mentality that certain groups deserve protection from ideas critical of their own behavior and beliefs is the precise opposite of traditional academic freedom, and could spell its downfall, along with freedom of expression in general.
In the sixties, the right of people not to be offended by pornography and controversial liberal ideas was shredded by the courts of the land. Now we are supposed to be learning from our pedigreed betters that that principle works only in one direction. Traditional beliefs are to be severely restricted, if not outlawed.
And btw, I am not even remotely sympathetic to the RC point of view on morality. BUT, I will fight for their right to teach what they believe, even if it causes the GLBT crowd to go apoplectic.
There is the new intolerance... It is evil and insidious. Good people are being threatened every day.
I couldn't agree more, detective.
Are you implying he misstated the church’s stance?
Next thing you know, a professor of proctology will get fired for using a finger instead of his (or her) entire fist.

Treatment of homosexuals within Islam:I'm betting this PC school wouldn't touch an Islamic 'Scholar' for 'offending' some little poofer.
According to a pamphlet produced by Al-Fatiha, there is a consensus among Islamic scholars that all humans are naturally heterosexual. Homosexuality is seen by scholars to be a sinful and perverted deviation from the norm. All Islamic schools of thought and jurisprudence consider gay acts to be unlawful. They differ in terms of penalty:The Hanafite school (currently seen mainly in South and Eastern Asia) teaches that no physical punishment is warranted.
The Hanabalites, (widely followed in the Arab world) teach that severe punishment is warranted.
The Sha'fi school of thought (also seen in the Arab world) requires a minimum of 4 adult male witnesses before a person can be found guilty of a homosexual act. Al-Fatiha estimates that 4,000 homosexuals have been executed in Iran since their revolution in 1979. 10 public executions of homosexuals have been performed in Afghanistan by the Taliban army.

The professor was obviously set up and targeted by a group that were out to get him.
The person who sent the email to the administration was not even in his class. He (or she) said they were doing it on behalf of an unidentified student. This student asked specific questions saying he (or she) wanted help studying for a test. The student in the class was not willing to report the professor but was supposedly victimized by a quote in an email about a Catholic principle that the professor sent.
but I bet they still have Muslim professors who believe in stoning women to death
When fascism comes to America (and it has) it will be carrying a pink swastika wrapped in a rainbow flag.
The people are to blame for allowing the “lavender mafia” to intimidate and deprive the majority of their First Amendment rights. This is just he beginning of the persecution of CHRISTIANS and viewpoint discrimination. The irony is that to the extent that the radical left and the “pink mob” are successful in silencing Christian voices in America, their religion of choice, “Islam” will fill the void and eventually “sharia” law will have the “homosexual community” longing for the day when peaceful western christianity ruled the day.
Cave into and ignore the intimidation from radical “gay” groups and your rights to dissent will go away.
It might be worth it to see Chastity Bono forced into a burka.
The brownshirts are back and wearing hot pink.
It is interesting that you should mention the Brownshirts. The leaders of the German SA (Brownshirts) as well as many, if not most, of the members were homosexuals.
“Don’t worry, its just those pesky Catholics, its about time somebody shut them up”...
What Martin Niemöller said appears in the Congressional Record, 14, October 1968, page 31636, as:
“When Hitler attacked the Jews I was not a Jew, therefore I was not concerned. And when Hitler attacked the Catholics, I was not a Catholic, and therefore, I was not concerned. And when Hitler attacked the unions and the industrialists, I was not a member of the unions and I was not concerned. Then Hitler attacked me and the Protestant church and there was nobody left to be concerned.”
BE CONCERNED! STAY PASSIVE AND SILENT AT YOUR OWN PERIL.
The government is not protesting the chilling persecution and attempts to silence and isolate Michael Savage in spite of 85,000 signatures backing him, what makes any of you think for one minute that “your” government will stand up for your rights?
Google “the night of the long knives” and the “Pink Swastika”
Needs to sue their pants off.
Nope. I am implying that he interjected his own opinion into the class. Same thing we say is wrong when some commie in the school district injects their own opinion about (insert leftwing talking point here)
