White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Monday that NASA administrator Charles Bolden was wrong to claim that reaching out to the Muslim world was a top priority for the U.S. space agency.
Bolden raised eyebrows in the space community and outrage among conservative pundits by telling Al-Jazeera television recently President Barack Obama had instructed him to work for better outreach with the Muslim world.
He said Obama told him one of his top priorities was to "find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math and engineering."
Improving relations with the Muslim world was a top foreign policy priority for Obama on taking office last year, and he delivered a major speech on the topic in Cairo in June 2009.
The White House last week sought to clarify Bolden's comment, saying Obama wanted NASA to engage with the world's best scientists and engineers from countries like Russia and Japan, Israel and many Muslim-majority countries.
That failed to end the controversy.

MSM is hanging onto the same lifeline as that flake, they will never turn on their one and only hero.
I go to work every day at MSFC in Huntsville. If people only knew how disgusted the rank and file NASA engineers are with Obama and Bolden.
We are BEGGING for some direction, some focus.
Instead, we get the administration digging into the contract fine print to spring a nasty surprise on hundreds of contractors. We get platitudes from Charlie B while he runs off to the Muslim countries, while at the same time the White House is doing it’s part to gut the capabilities that we have.
Gibbs basically left the impression that Bolden is too stupid to even know what his job is. After this latest train wreck, Bolden should be either demanding an immediate apology or resigning.
He’s a democrat, isn’t he? He ought to be accustomed to it, then, as that’s their natural form of existence.
Are there thousands of employees left at NASA? I thought the budgets cuts wiped out a substantial number of jobs. I wish Greta could get Bolden on to ask him some very pointed questions. Yes, I know I am dreaming!
Indeed. Jews and Aramaeans and Persians, who had a long history of scientific discovery. They were Arab-speakers long before they were “Arabs” in any cultural sense. The culture of the region had been a kind of blend of Greek and Semitic thought. Islam, or at least the fundamentalist strain, seems to strip out the Greek influences and to leave the people nothing but the poetry of the Koran and Islamic law. It is always looking backward to the golden days of conquest, nd what the jihadists today are trying to accomplish is to restart the fires so they can consume everything else.
If Bolden is lying then he is incompetent. If DumBO is lying, situation normal. Either way Bolden is toast.
My husband, who usually isn’t greatly political....heard this Gibbs statement today and about went ballistic.....he KNOWS Bolden has to be a smart guy and that GIBBS and the White House are LYING SOB’s.....
