Israel eyes Boeing's stealthy F-15E

The Israeli Defense Ministry is talking with the Pentagon about buying Boeing's F-15E1 because of delays in developing Lockheed Martin's F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, Israel's first choice for its next major fighter purchase, The Jerusalem Post reported Monday.

The Israeli air force took considerable interest in the F-15E1's 80-minute maiden flight over St. Louis at the weekend.

"While Boeing is still reportedly awaiting Pentagon approval to export the plane, Israel has already held a number of initial discussions regarding the plane and its capabilities," the Post reported.

The Israelis haven't reached a decision on whether to stick with the F-35, despite the 2-year delay in its development that was announced by the U.S. Department of Defense March 11 and the possibility that there could be further problems.

The delays mean the F-35 wouldn't be ready for operational deployment until 2015 instead of 2013, well past the date the Israelis wants to acquire new strike aircraft.

Could the F-15 SE be delivered by 2013 and what is the cost difference from the F-35?

The F-15 is cheaper than the F-35. The cost of the F-35 per plane was well over $100 million. The F-15SE cost $100 million dollars per plane. It seems to me that production of the F-15 will begin by 2012.

The Israeli's have had good experiences with the F-15 airframe. I remember seeing the Discovery Channel show about the F-15 the had that lost the wing on the Right side and still flew back to Israel!

It was leaking all sorts of fluids but still flew.

I just looked it up and here is the URL

Just amazing.

Zero leaves office in 2013 at the earliest, therefore there's no difference in this choice from the standpoint of timing -- Zero will never permit the Israelis to upgrade.

As long as the goat herder is in the White House, Israel won’t be getting anything.

All bought and paid for by USAID and US taxpayer monies. The only reason Israel’s trying to jump the que in front of every other ‘allied country’ like F-5 equipped Korea, Tiawan etc, is because Israel knows it won’t get F-35’s or anything else from the Hussein Dictatorship.

The cost of the F-35 is 191 million dollars and climbing. The Dutch left the program because of the cost.

I would rather give these planes to Taiwan,South Korea and Israel to aid in their defenses than Saudi Arabia. These countries(Taiwan,Israel and South Korea) are near hostile countries.
