Western 'propaganda' Won't Stop Woman's Execution By Stoning, Iranian Official Says
The Woodward Report ^ | July 12, 2010 | Patrick Martin

n a push back against international efforts to save a 45-year-old woman from death by stoning, an Iranian justice official insists that “Western media propaganda” will not prevent him from carrying out the execution as soon as he gets final judicial approval.

Malek Ajdar Sharifi, the judiciary chief of Iran’s East Azerbaijan, says the crimes committed by Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani were so heinous that “if she had only cut [off] the head of her husband, it would have been better than what she has done.”

He told the Iranian New Agency in Tabriz, the provincial capital, that “the verdict has been halted due to humanitarian reservations and upon the order of the honourable judiciary chief and it will not be carried out for the moment,” he said. “Whenever the judiciary chief [Sadeq Larijani] deems it expedient, the verdict will be carried out regardless of Western media propaganda.”

Government officials, celebrities and ordinary citizens from around the world have joined international human-rights organizations in a growing campaign against the stoning sentence given to Ms. Mohammadi Ashtiani. She was first convicted on May 15, 2006, of having an “illicit relationship” with two men, for which she received 99 lashes. At a subsequent trial of a man accused of murdering her husband, Ms. Mohammadi Ashtiani was charged with “adultery while being married.” It is for that crime that she has been sentenced to death by stoning.

On the weekend, Mohammad Javad Larijani, the head of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights, lashed out against the international campaign to spare Ms. Mohammadi Ashtiani, while pointing out that stoning is rarely used.

“The commotion that the Western media has started in connection with this case will not affect our judges’ views,” he said, noting that the West is fixated on the form of capital punishment...

Hey, what’s everyone getting all worked up about. She’s just a woman./s

Hmm, contrast with Jesus. “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.”

Indeed. The contrast could not be more stark. The people who torture that poor woman to death will one day have to answer for it to a power far greater than their heinous regime.

it sounds to me like this woman slept around with multiple men and then got one of them to kill her husband...

And we have a problem with her being stoned why?

I say draw and quarter.

What barbaric animal in all history ever came up with stoning as a punishment?

We have a problem with it because that is what ‘they’ say she did. Do you trust these guys? The ones who say because a woman gets raped that she should be punished?

“Stoning of Soraya was a very disturbing movie”

I had to fast fwd through part of the stoning scene. It was just too real, too heartbreaking, and too unbelievable that in this modern world this still goes on.

I hate to see all this angst among the Muslims. How ‘bout we do them a favor and take her off their hands. We promise to never let her leave the USA and go back. They can save the rocks for some other project, and perhaps it can all work out for the best. What say you, Mullah Grand Poobah? C’mon.

They're too busy demonizing Sarah Palin to be bothered with something like this.

Has the White House commented on this matter yet, or have they left it once more to a low-level State Department spokesman to offer his vague disapproval?

Stoning is such a cruel death, and it causes everyone in the community to become co-executioners. I'm okay with that part - if you support capital punishment, you SHOULD take your turn at carrying it out. I don't know how we could apply the underlying concept of community involvement to our current methods of execution.

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani (Persian: سکينه محمدي آشتياني , born 1967—) is an Iranian Azeri woman who is convicted to death by stoning in Iran for the crime of adultery. She was first tried on May 15, 2006 by a court in Tabriz, pleading guilty to the crime of "illicit relationship" with two men, though the incident occurred after the death of her husband. She was sentenced to whipping of 99 lashes, which was carried out.[1] In September 2006 her case was again brought up when a separate court was prosecuting one of the two men for involvement in the death of Mohammadi Ashtiani's husband. Though she was acquitted of involvement in his death, she was then convicted of adultery while still married and sentenced to death by stoning. She later retracted her confession to this crime, claiming it was made under duress and that she she doesn't speak Farsi, but instead only Turkish.[2][3] The Iranian supreme court confirmed her death sentence on May 27, 2007, such that only a pardon from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei could prevent the execution.[1]
