I’ve never heard it explained exactly what happened. Was it that the pressure was more than they were prepared for?

251 million years ago a mammoth undersea methane bubble caused massive explosions, poisoned the atmosphere and destroyed more than 96 percent of all life on Earth.

With the BP spill, the classic dinosaur-killing Meteor Theory is tossed for political expediency...

Well if you already did the math how many barrels would that total out to?

1) Multiply 70,000 barrels times 90 days times 42 gallons per barrel divided by 7.5 gallons per cubic foot.

2) Multiply 400 feet by 400 feet by 400 feet to get the cubic feet.

3) Compare total in 1 above to total in 2 above.

Cool, if it is a world killing event then having to listen to their bullshit about how we should live is over. It’s time to party and be rid of these tyrannical asshats. Somehow, it sounds so much better than having to put up with them.

I really don't know what happened. Some say they did not believe the pressure readings and it was human error. Some say the pressure was too much to be contained any way. One was saying it was a N. Korea torpedo. It will be a while.

Just going with part of your equation 700000*90 comes out to 630,000 barrels of oil in the Gulf.

Thats a lot of oil in the Gulf and we can all see the effects on the surface and most of it is not coming to the surface. Plus this well has a high content of Benzene and other highly toxic compounds in it

Now I dont know if this could end up being an apocalyptic event or not. I cant see the future but thats a lot of oil and methane plus the dispersants which creates a toxic mix and clearly the Gulf is being damaged greatly.

Go over to the OilDrum where the heavy hitters are. I guarantee you they take this one very seriously and no one over there dismisses the possibility this entire thing could blow out and collapse.

I dont know how this event will turn out I dont think this one is the end but that does not mean that great damage is not going to be incurred in fact it already has its now just a matter of degree what it will ultimately be.

But thanks for the article, it has several experts waying in the topic there. If what they are saying is true then I am pessimistic.

You didn’t do the math either did you. That amount of oil, 690,000 barrels, would FIT in a cube 400 feet by 400 feet by 400 feet. Not much more than the cube of a football field long by a football field wide by a football field field tall.

I started to do the math and then I thought ‘whats the point?’ so I did not finish it. I’ll take your word on it.

Look I had bad feelings about this the day the rig went down and as I learned more about the Geology of GOM and scope and nature of this reservoir I only got more anxious.

I doubt this is a world ending event but I could certainly see how it could kill the Gulf for several years if the containment efforts fail. It could easily be worse than Chernobyl time will tell we have to get thru the hurricane season and the relief wells have to work.

have a good weekend.

What’s a biblical proportion? Mine is 4.5 inches by 7.2. So the disaster is 4.5 x 7.2?

“but I could certainly see how it could kill the Gulf for several years if the containment efforts fail. It could easily be worse than Chernobyl time will tell we have to get thru the hurricane season and the relief wells have to work.”

Oh GOOD GRIEF. You are beyond common sense now. It is oil, oil evaporates, oil gets eaten by microbes, oil sops up sediments in the sea water and sinks and rots on the bottom. Half the volume you see coming out of the hole is methane that disperses in the air, the other half will be gone in a week from evaporation and microbes. The rest will take some time, but this is NOTHING the earth hasn’t fixed on it’s own many millions of times over.

So you are of the opinion that a single PIN HEAD size of oil in a larger-than olympic size pool (just the Gulf region) is dangerous?

YES!

There is an island in the Coral Sea that I think would be an ideal place to pass my last days. I’d better book it now!
