John McCain ditches his liberal past and turns hard right

The Republican 'maverick' bends in the wind of Tea Party-style politics

When does being a maverick turn into a shameless flip-flopper? Pretty much about now, according to many observers of the long and storied political career of former Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

Senator McCain, pictured, is now caught in one of the toughest political fights of his life, facing off in a primary fight against the Tea Party-style challenger JD Hayworth. And he is doing it in Arizona, which has just passed a strict anti-illegal immigrant law so controversial the White House is taking it to court.

All this means that McCain's traditionally liberal attitudes to immigration reform were always likely to take a bit of a hit. But few people can have predicted just how far McCain would go in rowing away from the previous positions that won him praise as recently as 2007 when he co-sponsored reform legislation with famed liberal Senator Ted Kennedy.

After the election: John McCain ditches conservatism and turns moderate.

But here's my thing. McCain is leading in the polls in AZ. I want to know *why* isn't Hayworth leading McCain by double digits? And before any of the usual suspects scream Sarah Palin, stop.

I'm not one of the "usual suspects". I was one of Palin's biggest fans and I still think she does a great deal of good for the country, but if you think her endorsement of McCain didn't make a bad difference, you should consider 3 facts.

1) Rasmussen did a poll before JD had even agreed to run and found him in a statistical tie with McCain.

2) Ras did another poll shortly after JD announced and (IIRC) it was 47 McCain to 42 for JD. What I remember for sure is there was only a five point spread despite the fact that McCain had been running nasty and dishonest ads from before JD announced.

3) Then Sarah Palin endorsed McCain and made a campaign recording which is still played on the radio. McCain JUMPED in the polls and the spread widened.

Now I have not written Palin off by any means, but disappointment is a gentle word for what I feel when I hear those ads. I know and acknowledge that she stopped compaigning for the evil old rat very soon after her few appearances for him, but the recorded ads go on and they do a huge amount of damage precisely because Palin IS such a powerful force and is so widely admired by Conservatives.

FWIW she also made a statement that if JD won the primary she would support him in the general, but we don't hear that very often. JD has pointed it out, but the enemedia will NEVER mention that.

So even though I'm still hoping for the best with Palin, it's wrong to say it didn't matter or make a difference that she endorsed McCain. It was and remains critical.

The good news is that Rasmussen said that even though McCain currently polls a good bit ahead of JD, McCain's numbers are roughly what Specter's were in his primary race until shortly before he lost to Sestak. The debates will be critical--consider that an understatement to put a Brit to shame!

Outside of the Palin influence, the biggest problem IMO is that AZ has a lot of older people who remember McCain coming home from the POW hell as a hero, but many of those same people grew up listening to the networks and reading newspapers and STILL get their information from those absolutely rotten sources.

Juan McCain brings to mind an old story.

Every year the religious revival would come to the small mid west town. And every year this fellow would get full of religion which would last a couple weeks and then he was back to his old ways. This happened many times.

Finally, the tent revival was there again. The preacher is showering the crowd with fire and brimstone, getting them pretty worked up. He shouts “Who wants to be filled with the Lord?”. The man stands up and shouts “I do. Fill me with the Lord”.

Woman behind him shouts, “Fill him full, he leaks pretty badly”.

McCain gets religion every 6 years, lasts about 2 weeks for him, too.

A fraud, yes, but as the late Roman L. Hruska, R-NE, might have said, “even frauds need representation too.” And AZ will be glad to comply.

Mr. McCain is nothing more than a "sound byte du jour."

I suggested long ago that he needs to retire to delivering Budweiser in the Valley of the Sun and STFU!

Benedict Arnold also had a distinguished service record at one point.

“If he looses I’ll bet he will change parties”

Yup, he sure would. The only guiding principle he has, is the principle of self preservation.

I bet he would sue to stay on the RNC ticket or some such thing, or run as an independent, thus siphoning votes.

Even if he loses this, he will be around to haunt us. Maybe a cabinet position from the Obozo.

You can bet one way or another, either the MSM or the DNC will take care of this guy, and they will use him and his daughter against conservatives for years to come.

I personally think it’s because of his brainwashing he went through. Being terrorized turns you into someone who values expediency and siding with the dominant power.
