A census worker just came to my house and I refused to answer any more questions.

I sent in the form when it came with the first question answered about how many people live at this address. I answered no other questions. They called this week and said to call them back. I did not. They just came by and I told them that I had already given the enumeration as required by the US Constitution.

Can they arrest me? Will they harass me?

The questions make me so angry because they are obviously going to be used by the government to justify racial discrimination.

I begged my wife to call them this week and tell them anything they wanted, but she didn't. I knew how angry it would make me to deal with them. I cannot bring myself to tell them things that are none of their business.

Can they arrest me?

What should I do?

More than likely if you do not answer their questions they will ask your neighbors.

They probably filled it out for you. They can fine you $500 but I don’t think they have fined anyone yet. The guy probably just filled it out for you.

Fuhgeddabouddit. The enumerator who came to your door doesn't care, and neither should you.

They can’t do a thing. The other day, the Census was at my next door neighbor’s house. They weren’t home, so the Census guy came to me. I told him to get lost, that I wasn’t about to speak to him about anyone, much less my good friends. He was a bit pushy, but finally left after I said I would call the cops.

Ditto. About an hour ago. I gave the Census worker a lecture on the Constitution told her there the number of people living in my home. I told her that other than that, the Census has no authority to inquire further. I did admit that there were two members of the HUMAN RACE, but refused to give any other information such as ages or my phone number.

I honestly think the Census worker (who looked like an out of work Real Estate Broker) was sympathetic.

They can’t arrest you but they can fine you.

I haven’t filled out the form and - as far as I know - they haven’t come around to my place yet.

I’ll answer their questions if they can stand still long enough when my daughter’s 100 lb German Shepherd comes to the door. :)

Funny.... I used your username to answer the race question. There are too many people not answering these questions. I doubt they’ll have mass arrests.

Rest easy and forget about it. If you won't provide answers, they will ask your neighbors for the desired information or go by their own determination. For example, if you refuse to answer their questions about race of inhabitants (I refused this year and in 2000, because racial preferences were outlawed in WA in the late 1990s), they will look at you and classify you. They may ask your neighbors if the others in your household are of the same race as you or not. I didn't receive a form this year so a census worker stopped by to get my information. I was lucky enough to be selected for a long form, so the guy asked all the questions. I answered them all except for the one on race. I told him that question was illegal in WA and, I believe, irrelevant and immoral. After all, with the election of a black illegal alien Marxist to the presidency, there can be no doubt that we are officially a post-racial society. The only people who insist race is still a factor are the racists.

Now there's a comforting thought for today.

Since the census taker that showed up at his door was black, the Holder Justice Department by order of "The One" will be looking into this incident as a race related crime, declare E Pluribus Unum a race based terrorist, declare him an anti-black enemy combatant and ship him off to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where he'll be forced to room with Achmed the Goat F**ker, read the qu'rap 3x a day and pray face down arse up towards mecca 5x a day.

Sorry E. That's just how it's gonna be the next few years while the Obama / Holder Justice Department is in power.

Question for those of you who are saying that you can be fined—Are you saying that you can be fined for not talking to the census worker or for not filling out the form?

Relax. They came to my door about 6 years ago. All I'd tell them was how many people lived here. The man had his computer out so I asked to hear some of the questions. He complied, hoping I'd answer. I didn't. They were very intrusive questions; everything short of my blood type.

He returned a two more times. I wouldn't answer anything. Then I got a letter from the Census Bureau. I threw it out. Never heard another word.

Nothing's going to happen to you.

According to Section 223 of Title 13 (Census Code) the only information that you are required to give are "the names of the occupants of said premesis".

As long as you give them that information you are not in violation of section 223 and not subject to the $500 fine.

As long as you don't throw them off your property in a fit of pique and refuse to give them the number of occupants and their names, you don't have to give any other information. The statute says that they are authorized to conduct the survey but I don't see anything in the statute that requires you to give any further information than the names of the occupants.

Constitutionally I don't think they are really allowed to even gather that information, but I'm sure that they would argue that in order to ensure proper enumeration they need to make sure that people aren't counted more than once. I suppose that might be reasonable.

You should have simply told them that there is 1 woman and one wuss living at that address and begged them not to beat you up.

Lots of information on this thread:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2548692/posts?page=22#22

All you are required to answer is how many live at your adress.
If you tell them to leave, they are trained to comply with your request. If they do not...call the police and the census bureau and file a complaint.

All you're required to do is tell them the number of people at your address.

We got chased by the "American Community Survey" last year from the census department. There was a long list of questions asking all kinds of personal stuff. After researching it on the internet, we discovered that there are a lot of "dissidents" refusing to participate so we decided to join the crowd and elude these census people, even though a $5,000 fine is threatened for non-cooperation.

Over the next while we put a chain across our driveway and threw away the further threats that came in the mailbox. One guy came to the door and I just pretended that I was way too busy to answer questions even though assured by him that it "only took 20 minutes". They tried to call on the cellphone but seemed meek and taken aback when my husband told them he was upset because they were using up our minutes.

We endured the 3 months of their attempts before they finally ceased and desisted. Three months is how long they generally chase everyone for this particular "American Community Survey". No one in history has been fined for not giving answers to this faux census.

We have no problem participating in the 10-year census (only answering one question), but we felt good about holding out on this other deal and would do so again.

” The questions make me so angry because they are obviously going to be used by the government to justify racial discrimination. “

Here’s one for our resident Constitutional Scholars and Historians —

I’m wondering if the Census question on ‘Race’ might be Constitutionally valid under the original framing - since a ‘freedmen’ black was counted as some fraction of a white citizen (3/5??), and therefore “Race” would be something needful to know....

Or, more likely, I’m all wet....
