HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Local and federal investigators were at a northwest Houston home Friday night where an explosion sent a woman to the hospital.

The woman was opening a package left at her doorstep in the 2100 block of Seamist Court Friday evening. She had found the shoe-sized box in front of her home about a day ago but didn't decide to open it until around 6:30pm Friday.

~~~SNIP~~~
The woman was transported to Northwest Memorial Hospital with facial injuries that are not life-threatening.
Officials with the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, as well as the Houston Police Department's homicide and bomb squad were at the scene investigating.
It wasn't immediately clear whether the house was targeted, however, Eyewitness News found out the home is owned by an oil company executive.
Jeez, where do you work? Los Alamos?
You would be suprised... A lot of major companies xray incoming packages. I work in the Marathon Oil Tower in Houston for another company. I don’t actually work for Marathon Oil. All incoming packages get xrayed. They even xrayed my pizza I had delivered one time. It had the little orange sticker “Due to safety concerns this item has been xrayed. Officer Bob”
“Also, he machined screws?”
I read that one thing that made his devices memorable was the carving, detail, and hand-made metal screws rather than storebought. He did not use pipebombs per se, but he did use somewhat elaborate cases. And FBI said he soldered connections, I guess he used wire nuts and alligators too.
Not me; I was asking the question “If you were connected to BP would you open a strange package?”
I didn’t mean to imply that his victim was connected.
Drinking too much seems pretty common in the oil and gas industry.
But, maybe it is just more common everywhere these days.
I was born on what they called back then, a “doodle-bugging crew”. They would set off explosives, my father would then read the resulting seismographs, from that information the wells would be drilled. Now that I think about it, the drinks were flowing liberally all around. Rough life, really.
There are many ways to lie, and the press knows all of them. Our press has become the PRAVDA of our formerly free nation.
The feds are too busy watching grandma at the Tea Party and using advanced surveillance to defend the death clinics.
Right, a better headline would say “Houston Oil Exec’s Wife Victim of Package-Bomb” or something like that.
The word “bomb” does not appear (we hear of bomb threats all the time and “suspicious packages” but rarely actual bomb incidents).
Also, she appesrs to have been specifically targeted as the victim (since her name appeared on the gift card).
So it isn’t just a “random act of violence”.
Curiosity probably got the better of her. It seems she wasn’t all that convinced something wasn’t right. She should have called the police.
You can speed up the process at some additional risk by poking the submerged box with a long stick to prod it open.
Not really safe enough, if the box contains a 25-kiloton nuclear weapon.
