HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Local and federal investigators were at a northwest Houston home Friday night where an explosion sent a woman to the hospital.
The woman was opening a package left at her doorstep in the 2100 block of Seamist Court Friday evening. She had found the shoe-sized box in front of her home about a day ago but didn't decide to open it until around 6:30pm Friday.

The woman was transported to Northwest Memorial Hospital with facial injuries that are not life-threatening.
Officials with the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, as well as the Houston Police Department's homicide and bomb squad were at the scene investigating.
It wasn't immediately clear whether the house was targeted, however, Eyewitness News found out the home is owned by an oil company executive.

Even smart people do things in certain situations that don’t seem to make much sense.
This doesn’t surprise me at all.
His brother turned him in after the feds published his “manifesto”, and reeled the brother in. You could say that was a successful strategy of the FBI. From what I remembered they had a pretty good idea but no evidence for a warrant, until the brother came in under immunity*.
His manifesto read just like Earth In The Balance, his targets, according to his manifesto, were environmental and political transgressors. Yeah, I’m not sure why universities would figure there; maybe they were not true-to-the-faith enough?
*How did Unibomber solder the wires, machine the screws, and do the fancy woodwork of the bomb cases in a shack with no tools or electricity?

The feds made a big deal, over months, about how they were going to publish the UNAbombers manifesto- where, when, by who, was under discussion.
Editorials were written about whether it was a good idea, and other articles spun off. All part of a Fed publicity campaign.
Finally they did publish, finally there were eds about UNAbomber and related matters, and finally his brother came forward and agreed to talk under immunity.
So it was not just his brother who dimed him out, it was part of a big media/PR effort led by the Feds. Loyal brother would never have done it on his own.
They avoided lots of details from coming out, by telling UNAbomber that they would prove he was insane in court, so he plead guilty, and they went right into sentencing. Lots of things we would like to have known got buried right then.
Me...There is NO WAY I would ever open a package that I did not expect...
