The U.S. Navy selected Northrop Grumman to supply infrared missile warning systems for fleet of heavy lift helicopters.
The contact is worth $80 million, the company said Thursday.
Under terms of the agreement Northrop Grumman more than 450 IRMWS and 90 processors to Naval Air Systems Command beginning in May 2011 and concluding in the second quarter of 2013.
The hardware, in conjunction with Northrop Grumman's Guardian laser transmitter assemblies and control indicator units delivered under the same U.S. Air Force indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract, will complete the initial Department of Navy Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures installation requirements on 156 aircraft to provide protection for U.S. Marine Corps CH-53E, CH-46E and CH-53D platforms.

I think FR´s posting clock is about 2 minutes fast.
Really. I have not noticed
Watch the posted times of the next few. Just a curio with me.
Now you have my interest.
Time test
Yep.......clock needs adjusting fer sure !
I agree
A missile warning system on a copter.. must be to warn you so YOU CAN JUMP OUT... or pray.. or kiss your whatever goodbye..
I was wondering that, too. On a heavy lift copter all it would do is announce that you are about to be hit by a missile. Maybe it is so you can have time to say a final prayer.
AN/ALE 47’s Chaff and Flares counter measures will provide a defense against most ......
I have always wondered about the effectiveness of flares. Personally, I would design an infrared detector that would ignore the white hot of the flare and focus in on the much cooler exhaust of the jet engine.
We are several versions beyond that.
We are several versions beyond that.
Thats a lot of money for a kiss yer shorts goodbye system...
Flares and other countermeasures are possible to use IF you have warning.
There has to be bugs that can’t be overcome or we’d have such......
I just rendered safe the ordnance when it became uxo or damaged etc .....:o)
Stay safe !
Oh for pete's sake! You telling me all the recent problems FR has had recently is because someone forgot to replace the AA battery again???
Geeeeeez... (LOL!)
From the article:
"The LAIRCM system, now installed or scheduled for installation in more than 500 military aircraft, automatically detects a missile launch, determines if it is a threat, and if so activates a high-intensity, laser-based countermeasure system to track and defeat the missile."
Then what good are flares? Or have we developed flares that burn at the same temp as a jet engine exhaust?
