ROMA Texas Department of Public Safety officials didnt know Jose Arturo Santa Cruz Cruz was a suspect in a recent slaying when they arrested him.
DPS took the Mexican national into custody Sunday on a charge of unlawfully carrying a weapon and then handed the man over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, said Roma police Capt. Francisco Garcia. It wasnt until Monday morning that investigators in Roma were able to put the pieces together and identify Cruz as the prime suspect in a fatal shooting that occurred last week.
Cruz, 21, allegedly shot Lauro Gonzalez several times in the torso about 1 p.m. July 1 outside an abandoned lumberyard on Gladiator Avenue, Garcia said. Gonzalez was also a Mexican national; his reason for being in Roma last week is unknown.
Police are still investigating the incident and searching for a possible motive, Garcia said.
We dont know if it was drug- or gang-related, he said. Thats what were trying to figure out.
Cruz was arraigned Tuesday on a charge of first-degree murder. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Gonzalezs slaying marks the first new homicide case Roma police have investigated this year.

I’m beginning to think they’re murdering more Mexicans in the USA than they are in Mexico! Their war is here. And we’re ALL collateral damage.
