ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — Family, friends and employees paid last respects Tuesday to Sen. Robert C. Byrd.

His casket was carried into Memorial Baptist Church in Arlington, Va., by a military honor guard, and a line formed for the late morning service in this Washington-area suburb. A single red rose, a spray of white ones and the twang of a bluegrass banjo were in the midst as mourners gathered inside a church.

The 92-year-old Mr. Byrd, who died last week, was to be buried later in the day at Columbia Gardens Cemetery, which is near Arlington National Cemetery, next to his late wife Erma.

Mr. Byrd, a West Virginia Democrat who served half a century in the U.S. Senate, died at a hospital in Fairfax, Va. Tuesday's service and burial were the culmination of a week of memorials that included his time lying in repose in his beloved Senate and a memorial in West Virginia's capital of Charleston.

"He did not serve in the military during the war, working instead as a welder in a Baltimore, Maryland shipyard, where he helped build warships.[citation needed] Byrd commented on the 1945 controversy about racially integrating the military. Byrd, when he was 28 years old, wrote to segregationist Senator Theodore Bilbo, of Mississippi, vowing never to serve in such a military: "Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.[5]" He had earlier written "I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side".[6][7]

I visited Arlington Nat'l cemetery last week, I was attending a Marine reunion in Washington. I've visited Arlington in the past, but haven't visited the Kennedy grave site. Jackie Onasis Kennedy is buried next to her first husband ... her grave is as elaborate (in terms of size) as JFK's. Interesting in that this women remarried, divorced, and later had a live in boyfriend in NYC for many years. But, hey ... we're talking liberals and Camelot.
What was just as appalling, Robert and Ted (the swimmer) were buried close by in the same plot. The only grave missing was Marlyn Monroe's.

Isn’t that a slap to WV! Used growing up there his whole career but he buries his wife near DC rather than home and has the same thing done for him. Atleast it will be easy to leave sheets there for him since it isn’t in the guarded military cemetery!
