EXCLUSIVE: GOP prepares as calls for Steele's resignation grows
The Washington Times ^ | 07/03/2010 | By Ralph Z. Hallow

With Republican National Committee Chairman Michael S. Steele facing a barrage of calls to resign, North Dakota Republican Party Chairman Gary Emineth, a social conservative, told The Washington Times on Friday he is quitting his post to prepare a possible challenge of Mr. Steele after November's midterm elections...

Mr. Emineth said what moved him to consider a bid for national chairman is what he called Mr. Steele's dismal failure with big donors who are giving to other, more trusted GOP campaign organizations as polls continue to show Republicans, if adequately financed, stand a good chance of regaining control of Congress.

"I was shocked at the last RNC meeting to learn how little money we got from our major donors," Mr. Emineth told The Times...

Among members of Mr. Steele's own committee, however, the disappointment with him has grown in proportion to the disappointment with his fundraising efforts.

"I have raised more money per capita for my party in my tiny state than New York or any other big state has raised for its party, but North Dakota gets no financial support from the RNC," Mr. Emineth said,

"The real contribution from a chairman is the ability to raise money from major donors," said Mr. Emineth. "We raised $400,000 in a single night in Fargo, North Dakota. Chairman Steele has managed to raise only $2 million from major donors all told."

"At times his hands-off approach to managing the national committee and his miscues have hurt the party," Mr. Emineth said. "He has been disappointing to many members."

In later posting the following words on the RNC's website, Mr. Steele appeared to eat his earlier words on Afghanistan -- and stand by them at the same time...

Steele was pretty smart saying what he did. Now no one can come right out and say “Your fired”. The Dems are just waiting for that one. They, the Dems, will be screaming “racist” at the top of their lungs. Repubs are trapped.

They get the survey back, but no check from our house.

I give to local candidates I approve of. Like Charlotte Bergmann http://www.bergmannforcongress.com/ who wants to replace the obamabutkisser steve ‘never met a tax hike he didn’t vote for’ cohen.

the man is a brilliant strategist

If you think losing the House and Senate was brilliant, then I guess you are right. He is still wrong on immigration, unless you think the Balkanization of the SouthWest is a good thing.

They’re not trapped. All they have to do is leave him where he is and put in a functional Assistant. Quietly take away all his power over the money and let him go out and gaff away and totally destroy his future career (I hope the dems are making it worth his while). Actually, Ken Blackwell would be a great person to put in as that “Assistant”. Check and mate.

>> As badly as I want to see Steele gone...

I agree. Steele should have stepped down long ago because of failures in leadership, but not because of his comments regarding Afghanistan.

It is sad the GOP relies on MSM momentum to force Steele off his post. It is a cowardly organization that fears the criticism of racism, and is using this bogus opportunity to gang up on Steele. The bastards should be defending him now!

Be on notice folks. The only reason we may pick up seats in November is because the GOP sucks less.

I think many registered Republicans and others are fed up with Republicans who lead like slightly conservative Democrats.
Fund raising issues/patterns were going to be different anyway till Republicans lead like conservatives.
I think the biggest clamoring for Michael to step down is from Democrats who would then claim disarray in the Republican party as a result.

If there is any stepping down or challenges to leadership changes in the RNC, it should happen after the next election before 2012 IMO.
