The fish that could eat the Great Lakes is only 6 miles away from Lake Michigan now — maybe.
The big, ugly and unbelievably hungry Asian carp has been making its way up the Mississippi for two decades and now appears to be closer than ever to migrating en masse to the world's largest body of fresh water.
If it starts reproducing there, scientists say, it's likely to eventually consume much of the plankton that forms the basis of the food chain that supports what's estimated to be a $7 billion sports fishery.
"These fish are extraordinarily prolific, and if they establish themselves in the Great Lakes, the Great Lakes are done," said Joel Brammeier, president of the Alliance for the Great Lakes.
To stop the carp, some environmentalists say we should consider spending an untold sum to redo the engineering feat that reversed the flow of the Chicago River and linked the Mississippi basin with the Great Lakes a century ago. That would stop the invading fish — maybe.
Such are the uncertainties confronting federal officials as they consider how to cope with the greatest threat to face the Great Lakes fishery in modern times.
The trouble is, the defining words in the Asian carp story seem to be: maybe and if.
The lakes already may be in big trouble — if the lone blackhead carp that was found last month in Lake Calumet, six miles from Lake Michigan, was one of many.
And radical changes in the Chicago waterways may be able to save the lakes from the invaders from afar — if they can be done on time, and if the monster fish doesn't find some other way into the lakes, which is something that may already be happening.

And our 7 billion dollar sportfishing industry can just go to hell right along with an even bigger tourism industry.
After some of the CRAP I’ve eaten at upscale delicacy restaurants I don’t think some people care about the taste as long as it’s expensive.

And if we don't stop the carp? What do you think will happen to the sports fish when the carp eat all the food and the young sports fish fingerlings? You need to do a little research on the impact of the Asian Carp.
Those seem to be the key words behind the rest of our government spending........Why not spend on something worthwhile?

That’s the whole point of preventing the carp from entering the lakes in the first place but Obama has done all he can to make sure they do enter the lake. That way he can further destroy America’s economy and gain an excuse for billions to study the problem.
I agree. Bounty. I’ve suggested it before, and other Freepers have agreed, and I’ve agreed with them when I’ve seen their posts.
And a bounty would stimulate fishing sales: everything from bait to poles to licenses.
The problem will be the yahoos who then try to raise it in their back yard to sell the offspring. How would you control that?

Placing a bounty on the pike won’t do it. They’re waaaay too prolific and those waterways are waaaay too deep. I don’t even think blasting with dynamite would do it.
Those waterways need to be shut down, or the Great Lakes fishing industry could well go under. And no one wants to ride a boat with those things around, either.

We’re going to need a bigger lake.
A lot of black folk around here catch them and eat them. They say that if you know how to remove the mud gland that they are pretty good but most white folk don’t know how. Even with the mud gland removed they are pretty much awful. A black lady at work brought some in her lunch one day and when she put it in the microwave to heat it she completely cleared the cafeteria. I’ve never smelled anything that bad before in my life. LOL I would have sworn she buried it for a week before digging it up and cooking it.
I doubt my dogs would even touch it.

I believe in the industry and ingenuity of the American entrepreneur. Make it worth their while and they will find a way. Got a better use for that money?

It doesn't matter how big it is, Lake Michigan is merely the doorway to ALL the great lakes including Lake St. Clair where I live.........
