One local official is voicing his frustration over what he calls a "nine-to-five" attitude by some federal authorities in the face of the oil disaster.
Jefferson Councilman Chris Roberts says the parish has a plan to build rock levees to help keep oil out of inland waterways like Barataria Bay.
Roberts told WWL First News that after they submitted the proposal to the Army Corps of Engineers last week, Corps officials said last Friday that discussion on the plan would have to be put on hold until the following Monday, because the Corps office would be closed for the weekend.
"Whoever reviews permits, and whatever departments and stakeholders and agencies need to give approval for this...should be working around the clock, just like the people are that are trying to get this oil picked up," Roberts said.
According to Roberts, after cooling their heels for the weekend, parish officials are still awaiting an answer. He says, however, he would be very surprised to get a response over the long federal holiday weekend to come.
Roberts told WWL First News that even if some federal responders take the 4th of July weekend off, many parish workers would be working overtime.
"We don't take breaks, this is an emergency for us," he said. "We're going to continue plugging away at it."
Any of you Freepers really surprised that hardworking bureaucrats would feel they deserved a little time off over the holidays?
They can celebrate when it gets too dark to work—hey, that’s when the fireworks are displayed! Works out pretty well that way.
Poor, things, a month of vacation, a month of sick leave and a month of holidays. All paid!! Poor Things!!
I would like to hear what we are doing or what we have done.
- time is of essence
Hussein must have really kicked some a** to get this kind of action!
The Feds will get paid whether or not the oil gets cleaned up. No skin off their noses.
Someone has to burn the flags! What do you expect for $85K?
Pray for the Gulf
Now if they started building the levee without a permit, we can be sure that the pencil pushers who stop real Americans from getting things done would be able to step in despite the weekend.
I am not sure about you, but there are millions and millions who have no idea of the tragic worldview of government (socialist) employment. I have worked Federal, State, and private, and the simple fact is, like the poster above says, government parasites get paid NO matter what they accomplish.
That is the sickness of Leftism!
The one exception is soldiers, who in their crises face life or death no matter what.
It is competition which keeps all of us honest. In macroeconomics that competition is called capitalism. Perhaps a misleading nomenclature, but whatever free enterprise and conmpetition is collectively called, that is what keeps all of us honest. Just like evolution.
Barack Obama and associates are truly the most tragic political regime that has ever struck the United States. It could have been all different: good competition, but still charity, imagination, freedom, self-honesty.
But we got Nancy Pelosi, Rahm Emmanuel, and Barack Obama. A sad reflection I guess of ourselves.

Accuracy should be your friend. It’s 26 days of vacation ( a little over a month) but only 13 days of sick leave and 10 days of holidays - So it’s only 49 paid days off a year.

“last Friday that discussion on the plan would have to be put on hold until the following Monday, because the Corps office would be closed for the weekend. “
So the parish had 3 days to work without federal govt interference. What are they waiting for?
How many vacations has Obama taken since the well blew?
How many golf adventures has he been on?
How many times he shot hoops?
This commieclown has been resting since the oath of office.
I'm in my early 50's and I haven't had 90 cumulative days paid leave in my life - and I got my SS card when I was 11 (after working under the table for 3 years).
I say let ALL state & fed employees follow California's lead, and let them work @ their respective minimum wages until the deficits are gone, starting with half 'n half and his troupe of freaks.
