ALTOONA. BLAIR COUNTY - An effort is under way to give a real thrill to local rail fans. Norfolk Southern is working on plan to bring steam powered train travel back to this region.
While the date the first excursion train trip around the horseshoe curve still has to be determined, Norfolk Southern is trying to finalize an agreement that should put a steam powered engine back on the rails later this year.
Norfolk Southern is working out the final details of an agreement with the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum to use that Museum's three steam locomotives to power some passenger train trips.
While the first of these trips will be in the area around Chattanooga, Tennessee, rail officials say the coal fired locomotives will eventually be pulling passenger trains on the Norfolk Southern main line through this region.
Backers of the program say when the steam locomotives roll though the region , they are sure to attract a lot of attention. Norfolk Southern is currently finalizing their plans for running the tourism based passenger excursions. They hope to have the first trips underway later this year and be bringing the steam powered trains to our region as the program expands over the entire Norfolk Southern system.
COOL!!!
“Pardon me, boy, is that the Chattanooga Choo-Choo?...”
Yeah, but remember what happened when it went through that long tunnel?
“SAME THING HAPPENED IN ATLAS SHRUGGED.............”
I was thinking the same thing. What next? Rickshaws for all the ‘small people’?
YEAH, REMEMBER WHO WAS ON THE TRAIN?.......
They run a steam loco here for a couple of weeks in august. It is SO neat.
It is astonishing how much smoke and soot it puts out. What must a city have been like when there were a thousand of these things running 24 hours a day?
“When you see the lights go out in New York City, you will know we have won.”.............John Galt............
Nice, but my favorite is the Southen Pacific 4449 Daylight which has been said to be the most beautiful steam engine ever. We have an O guage and an HO gauge of this engine and cars.

Certainly a fun TOURIST EXCURSION.
But I’m looking for an economic recovery that will bring freight traffic back to where there is no room for these nostalgic reminders of yesteryear
UP runs their steam engine locomotives on reclaimed oil (filtered crankcase drain oil.)
You sure are posting a lot of articles about trains these days Willie. Personally, I’m hoping we can get some serious government subsidies to bring back the stage coach too.

Then you should be supportive of infrastructure projects that eliminate the conflicts/bottlenecks between freight and passenger service.
Is that Union Pacific? They really use steam engines today?
sounds like a porno

Horse doodie on the highway is more biodegradable than tarballs on the beach, I suppose.
But someone's still gonna pass a law to make you bag your sh*t and take it home with you.
No thanks... electric trains are a lot cleaner than that.
