The Petraeus challenge
NY Post ^ | July 1, 2010 | Ralph Peters

Posted on 07/01/2010 2:36:51 AM PDT by Scanian

We're failing in Afghanistan. Con firmed yesterday as our new com mander there, Gen. David Petraeus has the unenviable task of producing something President Obama can call a success.

If Petraeus can salvage the situation so that our minimum needs are met, he'll confirm his reputation as the greatest American soldier of our time. Should he falter, he'll go down as the general who sold the Pentagon a disastrous doctrine.

Petraeus did not want this job. But our president didn't know to whom else to turn in the wake of last week's debacle with Gen. Stanley McChrystal. Petraeus did his duty, saluted and said, "Yes, sir."

Politically, Obama couldn't have made a shrewder choice. Petraeus enjoys cult status on both the right and the moderate left. The question is whether he's the right man militarily.

Petraeus is a man of integrity. Now we'll see if he's also a man of character. Will he have the wherewithal to accept that our current approach -- based on the counterinsurgency doctrine he authored -- doesn't work in Afghanistan? Or will he continue trying to win unwinnable hearts and minds?

IMHO, Petraeus should have turned POTUS Obama down. The good general has bowed to those Democrat America haters that hate him, and these people, from POTUS Obama on down, will use General Petraeus as the fall guy as Afghanistan goes down. Problem is really Obama who has screwed this operation up, thus forcing Pakistan, India, Iran and Afgahnistan to cut their own deals as it favors their objectives. My heart and soul goes out to our military folks out in the field that are just being treated like cannon fodder by Obama and his Democrat Party. My heart and sould go further out to the moms and pops and wives and children, etc. of our military personnel that must suffer death or injury under this totally incompetent and un-American POTUS Obama. And....I am utterly disgusted with all Americans who stand idly by remaining silent, instead of calling for Obama’s scalp. Sad to say, Americns and America have seen their best days!!! How any American can sleep at night with this traitor as POTUS is far beyond me!!!

Your reasoning is faulty.

If you are really concerned for our soldiers, you must understand that Patraeus is their best hope.

Peter’s statement “the only way to defeat an insurgency that includes religious zealots is to kill your enemies with greater ruthlessness than they can kill you. No exceptions.” is the solution to the problem! Will this happen .......... we’ll see?

The longest war in terms of time, perhaps—but this is a very poor metric. It seems silly to compare a war in which we lost 58,000 to one which we have lost just over 1000. The resources poured into Vietnam were gigantic compared to Afghanistan as well (in terms of current day dollars).

.......but this is a very poor metric. ....

You are correct

The casualties are trivial when compared to the war being lost in American cities where thousands of black on black murders occur annually all across the country.

The length of the war is irrelevant. The war will end only when the enemy is destroyed. Korea is the best example. That war is still in progress after more than 50 years.

We're failing in Afghanistan.

No, we haven't yet won, and the momentum is not currently in the right direction, but that is far different from the inaccurately hopeless tone of "failing".

Confirmed yesterday as our new commander there, Gen. David Petraeus has the unenviable task of producing something President Obama can call a success.

Again, no. Petraeus has the unenviable task of complying with the orders of an incompetent anti-American Community-Organizer-in-Chief while still managing to shape a genuine victory that serves the best interests of the American people and protects the Constitution of the United States against our foreign and domestic enemies (without even being sure which of the two categories describes Obama). Petraeus needs to produce something that real Americans call a success, a situation on the ground that makes our country safer in the long term and doesn't just protect the thug in our White House politically for the short term.

If Petraeus can salvage the situation so that our minimum needs are met, he'll confirm his reputation as the greatest American soldier of our time.

Once more, I disagree. I worked with Col. Petraeus (yeah, years ago), and he is a brilliant soldier. Meeting our minimum needs in the face of opposition from the White House itself is quite an accomplishment, but it comes nowhere near the high praise being linked to that outcome. If Petraeus can meet all of our needs, leaving Afghanistan unusable to Al Qaeda and the Taliban, leaving Pakistan well-disposed toward our country and unusable to Al Qaeda and the Taliban, and discrediting the extremists throughout the Islamic world, that would be a major accomplishment, perhaps big enough to compare Petraeus with our other top soldiers and debate which man deserves to be ranked #1. Minimum needs? Sorry, but that falls so far short of the standard set by many of our generals that I wonder if this author knows any of our military history and can name a single general who hasn't been mentioned on CNN or MSNBC in the past month. I could go on, but the bottom line is that I don't think this article was well thought out. The author needed to think a little deeper, a common issue for those who hang out near DC.

You are correct. General Petraeus is our best hope for America, Americans and our military personnel in Afghanistan and around the world. The problem is POTUS Barack Hussein Obama who is anti-American and has no interest in American victory or success in Afghanistan, Iraq or Israel. This is plainly evident in his actions, inactions and his past love and adoration for Black racists and America haters, Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Louis Farrakhan. Wise up!!!

Obummer and his cohorts are wrecking the values Americans cherish. The only bright spot is that our men and women in uniform can have confidence that Patraeus will not waste their lives.
