Designed to provide an alternate heat source for heat-seeking missiles. They’ve got “chaff” (foil strips) to mimic radar-returns in order to counter radar-homing missiles, too.

Considering the low level attack capability, maybe firing up makes more sense?
Anecdote: I was standing on top of Granite mountain in Ft. Irwin, really good view of the surrounding desert, valleys and all. I heard a B-1 (I assume) roaring away down there somewhere on a low level route, but damned if I could spot him. He faded out, but no clue where he was. Impressive.

The Air Force has floated the idea of retiring all B-Ones due to budget restrictions.

Where the heck is the flare dispenser on the B-1B? You can't see the guy leaning out the r/f window?
....sorry...giggle....
Very cool pic!

They fly nape of the earth at night here in Kansas. You will be going down I-35 and all of a sudden your car starts rumbling like you have a flat tire or no oil in the engine. The first time you look at all your gauges and feel the steering wheel to see if you have to pull over and the sound just gets louder. All of a sudden they pass overhead and all you see is the glowing circles of the engine exhaust.
Then they are gone. Waay cool. I always say a prayer for the crews and am glad they are on our side. You wouldn't ever want to be the one they are after.

Thanks. Now I’ll have to find a way to work that into a conversation.

Designed to provide an alternate heat source for heat-seeking missiles. These flairs are on the aircraft..staying on the aircraft. They are not being dropped by the aircraft. These alternate heat sources would sucking the missile right onto the aircraft.
