Chicago Blackhawks, Cubs Partake In Gay Pride Parade
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | June 28, 2010 | Sandra Guy

An eclectic mix of stars — The Stanley Cup with Blackhawks defenseman Brent Sopel, The Cubs’ Ernie Banks and country singer Chely Wright — basked in the celebration of an estimated 400,000 who attended the 41st Annual Pride Parade in the Lakeview neighborhood. The parade started at noon.

Wright, who recently came out as a lesbian, is the parade’s Grand Marshal. Wright said her decision to publicly declare her sexual orientation has been “a dynamic experience.”

Sopel, who stood on the float of the Chicago Gay Hockey Association, said he participated in the parade to honor the memory of the gay son of his former general manager.

Brendan Burke had come out as a gay man when he was 21 and working for the hockey team at Miami University of Ohio. He was killed in February in a car accident on a snowy and icy road in Indiana. Burke is the son of Brian Burke, the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team. The elder Burke was Sopel’s general manager while he played with the Vancouver Canucks.

I always thought there was something a little ‘off’ about the Cubs.

Well I wouldn’t have been surprised by the White Sox, but the Cubs? Who would have thought. Methinks Chicago is pretty gay.

I’m sick of these teams getting involved in political issues.

The Tigers played the Los Mets in NY last week.

You can't be serious. What would possibly make you think that? (Not anything close to resembling reality).

Highsticking is desirable in homohockey.

I'm guessing they take a lot of five-minute major penalties for spearing (Rule 62) and butt-ending (Rule 58).

And maybe a bunch of minor penalties for checking from behind (Rule 44) and holding the stick (Rule 54), too.

This is what happenswhen things are controlled from the top down.

Big, big teams on big, big television, the players paid at the multi-million dollar level.

things are more easily taken over when power and prestige is all at the top.

So stop watching! Play on a local team yourself. Return Big Sports to the neighborhood.

I can’t stand televised sports myself but then I’m a chick. And I don’t have a damned television.

They are pushing their lifestyle down our throats whether we like it or not. I fear it’s another lost battle in fight for morals.
