SAINT-DENIS, Reunion -- Sixteen-year-old sailor Abby Sunderland is homeward bound - though her plane flight back to California isn't the homecoming she originally imagined when she set off in hopes of sailing around the world.
About two weeks after her rescue at sea, Sunderland departed Sunday from the French island of Reunion, off the southeastern coast of Africa, en route to France, then on to California.

Why didn’t she fly the plane herself with no co-pilot and no
crew - isn’t she SuperGirl?
I am shocked they had no helium balloons to fly her home?
I can’t believe her parents are allowing their sixteen year-old daughter to fly half-way around the world by herself.
Rudderless overly-indulged child of idiot parents sent home after God knows how much money spent by many agencies.
There are some things that require maturity to do. This is one. Only idiot parents would allow it, much less encourage it.
lol
I don’t understand the ugly comments about this situation. I’m glad she’s safe, glad she’s on her way home.
“I cant believe her parents are allowing their sixteen year-old daughter to fly half-way around the world by herself.”
Her brother met her at Reunion. Not sure if they’re both flying back to LAX together.
They should have just sent her to Aruba for a week
She was sent out 8 months ahead of schedule, unprepared, in order to have a shot at the record.
I can’t believe their parents would let two minor kids fly half-way around the world!
Suddenly everybody’s an expert on solo sailing. If she and her family have any sense, they’ll just go home and not talk to anybody. And get another boat ready.
And we’ll all go back to finding our heroes from the ranks of rappers and coked up ball players whose mamas can’t spell.
LOL!
Why? She came from a family of morons who passed on their genes and lavished her with cash and the freedom to continue moronic behavior. What has it cost nations to save her young, liberal ass so far? That’s money out of your pocket, and mine.
I don’t like fools taking money out of my pocket - maybe it’s ok with you, but not me.
I have been reading a sailing forum, Sailing anarchy. They don’t respect her father. There was also info that wasn’t in articles. And then there are the freeper sailors who gave info. You want info, ask a sailor. I did.
I wish more people in this country had her kind of ambition.
I don't either. In the middle ages, children left their parents when they were 5 or 7 and were indentured as trade apprentices. In most countries in this world a 16 year old is considered an adult and treated as such. By the time a child is 16 in many third world countries, they have been working full time for 10 years.
I look at this as an American challenge. Sure she could have been killed, but then giving your car keys to a 16 year old on a Saturday night is probably just as dangerous.
I know a lot of 16 year old kids who were killed or maimed because their parents let them borrow the car on a weekend night. You don't see them in the headlines when they are fished out of their car by the jaws of life.
How many of these nannny stater critics ever let their children use their car on a weekend? I did. I trusted my kids to act like adults when they were 16. I guess maybe I should be jailed?
We’ve discussed this, can’t you be glad she’s ok?
Her brother met her at Reunion.
Actually, her press officer, Lyall Mercer, and a couple of members of the Family Sunderland PR team went to Réunion to meet her and manage the news of her arrival. Her brother was sent along as cover for this operation.
Did you send your kid out in a car that wasn’t ready to be driven?
