EU to ban selling eggs by the dozen
The Daily Mail ^ | 6/27/2010 | Christopher Leake

British shoppers are to be banned from buying eggs by the dozen under new regulations approved by the European Parliament. For the first time, eggs and other products such as oranges and bread rolls will be sold by weight instead of by the number contained in a packet. Until now, Britain has been exempt from EU regulations that forbid the selling of goods by number. But last week MEPs voted to end Britain’s deal despite objections from UK members. The new rules will mean that instead of packaging telling shoppers a box contains six eggs, it will show the weight in grams of the eggs inside, for example 372g. Or that a bag of white rolls has 322g inside instead of half a dozen. The rules will not allow both the weight and the quantity to be displayed. Last night, Britain’s Food Standards Agency said it was opposed to the move, putting the UK on a potential collision course with Brussels. It could be the first test of David Cameron’s pre-Election promise to stand up for Britain’s interests in the EU. Eggs have traditionally been sold by the dozen or half-dozen, because the old imperial measurements such as inches or pennies were calculated in groups of 12. Early in the 20th Century, eggs were sold from trays on shop counters and carried home in paper bags. But between the two world wars, it was discovered that eggs kept longer if they were left standing on their ends, so the cartons of 12 and six were developed. Last night, an FSA spokeswoman said: ‘This proposal would disallow selling by numbers. Retailers would not be allowed to put “Six eggs” on the front of the box. If it was a bag of rolls, it would say “500g” instead of six rolls.

here in australia, they show dozen and the weight

The EU regulation prohibits putting the number on the package along with the weight -- must be just the weight showing.

That brings up another question. How can you even have packaging, since every random dozen eggs will vary in weight a little?

I’m sorry...but since when does anybody care how much an egg WEIGHS?

I’ve never seen any recipe, anywhere that says, “25 grams of egg.”

I’d laugh at the Europeans for doing this, but I’m afraid we’re right behind them in the stupidity department, so I guess I should lay off.

Regards,

Common sense would show both. How is a body supposed to shop for recipe items? The next demand will be that recipe books show weight rather than other measurements; i.e. teaspoon.

Perhaps they already do.

This world has gone totally nuts!!!!

This is what happens when you give people with tyrannical ambitions power wherever they’re employed. They dream up things to inflict on other people whether the measures are needed or not. I remember my Brit in-laws bitterly laughing about the directive for non-curved bananas.

In the U.S., eggs are sorted by size, with small, medium, large, and extra large, iirc. So one dozen extra large eggs will generally cost more than one dozen medium eggs. (Small eggs are generally sold to industrial users, like bakeries.) The weight of a dozen large eggs will vary from one sample to another, but no one was complaining. It's another example of bureaucrats solving a problem only they perceived.

I'm expecting a decree soon regarding forced wearing of underwear inside out. We must wear underwear on the outside, so that they can check.

As I was reading that I thought you were going to say, "We must wear our underwear inside out after wearing it normally so that we can save on laundering."

Funny. I bought a dozen large eggs last week and they seemed smaller than they should have been. I was wondering if standards had changed. I would like to see the weight and quantity on my carton of eggs.

Socialists would love to control and set all prices. But that would be communism. Regardless, that is their goal and this is one step on the way.

Has anyone considered the race and gender implications? If this leads to differential levels of confusion adversely affecting any mascot group, this would be a severe human rights violation. This needs to be studied carefully. It will probably require a whole new EU agency created just for this purpose.

Buy a scale. Take it to the grocery. Don’t buy the eggs if you don’t like the weight.

I have a fine battery-powered kitchen electronic scale I bought for pizza dough making that would be fine for the purpose. I think it was around $50. Get one, and knock yourself out. Don’t go asking for a law.

I think it’s time that the British become a “team player” in the rest of the world.

I can see breakfast: “Johnnie, how many grams of eggs would you like?”

You are cheating yourself! A pint would be 473ml. One advantage though would be that instead of a pint (473ml) you might get 500ml as they do in Germany.
