BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland is using more than $500,000 in federal stimulus money to build at least 64 charging stations for electric vehicles.
The stations will be located in parking garages in Baltimore and elsewhere along Interstate 95.
Another $500,000 will go toward wiring truck stops so truckers won't have to rely on their diesel engines to provide electricity while parked.
General Motors Co. is preparing to roll out the Chevrolet Volt later this year, with automakers following with their own electric vehicles soon after. Maryland officials hope public charging stations will encourage consumers to buy the cars.
The General Assembly has approved a $2,000 tax credit for the purchase of electric vehicles.

They have to limit the charging to night time only to avoid global warming and access loading.

What a joke - it takes about 3 minutes to fill a car with gasoline - the best guess on charging a battery is hours... Can you imagine the lines.

The electric car is coming. Not least amongst the reasons for it is the fact that nobody can work on automatic transmissions any more and the only way out of that is what diesel-electric trains and the heaviest trucks all do which is use electric motors on the wheels in lieu of transmissions.

Oh the taxpayers will just subsidize the cost, just as with mass transit.

Electric cars make a lot of sense if:
* The grid is improved to handle the load
* Most charging takes place at night
* 100 more nuclear generating plants are built, and
* a back-up gas/diesel generator is built into every car in case of an emergency

Electrically powered mass transit gets its electricity from the grid while it's moving. It doesn't have to stop anywhere to refuel.

Yep...this is the solution to glowbull warming—coal-powered cars! Or did Maryland build a couple nuke plants too?

Yep and being in Baltimore...not the safest part of the state to park any vehicle. Unless there’s a nasty shock for trying to steal one.

I predict the "volt" will turn into the REvolt...it will go the way of the Vega and the Corvair.
In the first place, I'll never buy an electric car, and secondly, if we all hold out, they'll have bunch of empty buildings up there in Maryland.
The peacock has already promised us that electricity rates will "significantly increase", so in addition to the time wasted and inconvenience, it'll cost as much to charge the batteries as a tank of gas, with less mileage per "fill".
I will never buy another General Motors product, and I won't buy an electric car; we are being pushed into the world of the rabid environmentalist.

1. I have had no problem getting folks to properly fix and rebuild transmissions. Although I live in area with a disproportionate number of gear heads. (north-western IL)
2. Modern electric cars have transmissions, probably for efficiency reasons. The Tesla Roadster was held up for months due to problems with the transmission.

Idleair already exists and is seen as a disaster by most truck drivers I know.

I have a question - where is the excess electricity to charge cars going to be generated? New nuclear or coal fired plants? Because solar and wind ain’t going to do it.
