Steinem criticizes Palin for using feminist brand

Gloria Steinem, an icon of the women’s movement, has criticized Sarah Palin for trying to brand herself as a feminist.

In an interview with @katiecouric, Steinem argued that a woman who chooses not to have an abortion can call herself a feminist, but “you can't be a feminist who says other women can't have an abortion."

To be sure, Palin’s role as a feminist has been an issue ever since she made history by becoming the first woman to run on the Republican national ticket. Unlike the Democratic side of feminism, however, Palin is a conservative and opposes many of the issues such as abortion and gender rights that fueled the women’s movement.

Palin, who is strongly anti-abortion, reignited the debate over who could call themselves a feminist and what that means in a May 14 speech for the Susan B. Anthony List, a PAC for antiabortion female congressional candidates.

Using grizzly bears as a metaphor, Palin seemed to imply that feminism need not apply only apply to liberal supporters of abortion rights. Conservative PTA moms can be empowered in their positions as well and can call themselves feminists, she argued.

Woman’s true power comes from pulling together with her family members to strengthen her own family, and in doing so, to strengthen her entire clan, which leads to a free and productive culture. Women who consistently raise up well bred God fearing children are indispensable, and will always be honored.

Steinem’s definition of a “feminist” sounds more like a cultural parasite whose need to prove herself comes at the expense of all others. The highest social paradigm is not in dependence, but interdependence.

There ya go, confirmation that feminism was not about empowering women to achieve their goals re: education, obtaining the CEO's corner office, "We can do anything a man can do" or the rest of the PC crap that has destroyed the language. Nope -- it was all about being able to exert the ultimate power over a man, the right to kill his child.

Thanks for making my decades-long point for me, Gloria.

Steinem - what an ignorant hack. She’s a slut for the Leftist agenda, but no champion of the rights of REAL women.

Uhhh... Sarah doesn't need any association with the dyke squad. She's the reel deel and makes both sexes shudder when she speaks.

Let’s get more specific -

you have to support lesbianism and killing babies.

Well, actually, you just have to support killing babies.

Then you’re a “feminist”.

Ah, you’ve hit upon the crux of the matter.

By NOT having an abortion herself,
Palin has pointed out that there, indeed, are more choices than abortion. Inherently, this implies that there is a moral difference between killing the baby and not killing the baby.

THIS is what the “feminists” can’t stand to have brought to their consciences. Most “feminist” “pro-choicers” are women who’ve had abortions and are seeking to forever justify their decision to kill their child.

Steinem??? is she the one with a mustache?

I haven't seen a recent picture of her but I think she is the one without a mustache.

“In May 1975, Redstockings, a radical feminist group, raised the question of whether Steinem had continuing ties with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Though she admitted to having worked for a CIA-financed foundation in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Steinem denied any continuing involvement.[12] Steinem was also a member of Democratic Socialists of America.[13] In 1984 Steinem was arrested along with Mrs. King, Amy Carter, over twenty members of Congress, and other civil rights activists for protesting the apartheid in South Africa.”

Interesting that Steinem’s version of feminism revolves around death(abortion)

No wonder this brand of feminism made such as mess of women’s lives.

If you are against abortion and believe that it is also best for women to adjure abortion in their own lives, I think you can, with integrity, call yourself a feminist. If you don’t think it is best for women, but just best for the baby, you are on shakier ground in calling yourself a feminist.

I can’t think of one pro-lifer I know who believes the second, so I would judge that we can all safely call ourselves feminists if we want to.

Gloria has had some good things to say over the years, but this is not one of them.

Let's face it, also.
If Steinem wasn't "hot" in her day,
no one would have listened to her either.

From Webster:

Feminist: one who adhheres to the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.

No mention of Abortion...

The bigger question for Gloria is whether one can be a feminist if one is a d*ckhead.
