Energy Myths Can't Replace Fossil Fuels
IBD Editorials ^ | June 23, 2010 | ROBERT J. SAMUELSON

"For decades, we've talked and talked about the need to end America's century-long addiction to fossil fuels. ... Time and time again, the path forward has been blocked — not only by oil industry lobbyists, but also by a lack of political courage and candor."

President Obama, June 15 address on the BP oil spill

Just once, it would be nice if a president would level with Americans on energy. Barack Obama isn't that president.

His speech last week was about political damage control — his own. It was full of misinformation and mythology. He held out a gleaming vision of an America that would convert to the "clean" energy of, presumably, wind, solar and biomass. It isn't going to happen for many, many decades, if ever.

For starters, we won't soon end our "addiction to fossil fuels." Oil, coal and natural gas now supply about 85% of America's energy needs. The U.S. Energy Information Administration expects energy consumption to grow only an average of 0.5% annually from 2008 to 2035, but that's still a 14% cumulative increase. Fossil fuel usage would increase slightly in 2035, and its share would still account for 78% of the total.

Unless we shut down the economy, we need fossil fuels. More efficient light bulbs, energy-saving appliances, cars with higher gas mileage may all dampen energy use. But offsetting these savings are more people (391 million vs. 305 million), more households (147 million vs. 113 million), more vehicles (297 million vs. 231 million) and a bigger economy (almost double in size).

Double the economy in 27 years? Not with Democrats in charge and taking us back to the stone age.

Why do we need these population increases?

Almost all in increase in population is coming from immigration and the offspring of immigrants.
We should go back to the immigration policy we had before 1965. Had we not changed our immigration policy (Democrats did it of course) we would be at about 265 million today, but more important the growth rate would be very small. Now we at at 310 million and off to the races with no end in sight. Madness, shear madness!

But we'll have flint, and fuel, and...

probably will reinvent the zippo so we can take up smoking...

Yeah! That'll frost them....

Check old history photos of all the wooden oil derricks everywhere about a century ago.

All those American wells were abandoned for new gushers.

Guess what, they've all filled back up.

Simply because without an consistent increase in population the various government Ponzi schemes go broke. The pyramid requires an ever expanding base or it collapses...

It is as simple as that.

The first part is the objective of the far left.

A very good piece, up until this last part:

The outlines of a pragmatic energy policy are clear. A gradually increasing tax on oil or carbon would nudge people toward more energy-efficient products, including cars. Any tax should be part of a budget program that includes major spending cuts.

A better approach is to let the so-called "green energy alternatives" compete economically. Let the market decide when they become viable alternatives to petroleum. Technocrats deciding such things tend to get it wrong, big time.

Yes, the 'erf makes it.

"As above, so below".

Most important lesson.

Just because you bleed doesn't mean you run out of blood.

I am not a geologist, but its pretty much given that its a geological process, like coal, like diamonds, etc...just depends on the carbon and other elements present and pressures and temperatures and time.

The dinasaur theory is just one the enviro’s want to perpetuate. IMHO.

I applaud you as a home schooler. That must be both fun and challenging.

It’s easier and much more fun than shipping my kids away, six hours a day.

We are using “The Politically Incorrect Guides” for History next year. I need to see if there is one on “fossil fuels”.
