General Stanley McChrystal has been stitched up by Rolling Stone
UK Telegraph ^ | 6/22/10 | Adrian Michaels

There isn’t very much in the Rolling Stone article requiring an apology from General McChrystal, the man in charge in Afghanistan who has been summoned to the White House. If he does resign, it should not be because of perceived slurs against the White House. They’re not there

As 2nd generation American from UK - it means he was betrayed with false evidence. We say “framed.”

There was a copy of the article available online until recently

Hmm. Where'd it go? Why? I thought journalists were all into speaking truth to power.

And Obama promised a transparent administration... Where did he learn the meaning of the word transparent?

I’m more confused by this comment: “it would hardly be the first time that a general and a president have not got on like a house on fire.” I don’t know if that’s a British saying or the invention of this particular writer, but it sounds weird.

The incompetent pissant currently infesting the oval office can’t stand any criticism whatsoever.

He’s a dangerous piece of narcissistic rage.

I wish he would disappear into the corn field.

I read the article . I think the whole clown posse including Mcchrystal should go. If any of its true they are wasting time and good men and women over there.

Getting on like a house on fire means getting along very well. The reasons as to how such phrase which on the face of it sounds so condradictory to its actual meaning seems to be lost in the mists of time.
Perhaps it is a reference to how close the flames and the house are to each other and in such a spectacular fashion or something...

Wow, I’d love to know whether the MSM was going bonkers over nothing (per usual), but I can hardly stand reading that thing. Vulgar, discursive, and seemingly interminable. Worst of all are stupid statements like:

“When it comes to Afghanistan, history is not on McChrystal’s side. The only foreign invader to have any success here was Genghis Khan – and he wasn’t hampered by things like human rights, economic development and press scrutiny.”

Afghanistan is one of the most conquered territories in the history of the world, you complete ignoramous. Where do these rumors start? The U.S. has already had “success” in the same manner as the great Khan, who in addition to not caring about human rights also didn’t care about nation-building. Just because the Soviets couldn’t do it (and there was lots they couldn’t do, for instance feed their population) doesn’t mean no one can.

Maybe McChrystal is fired or quits I sure hope he will sing like a canary and get a tell all book out before November.

I agree. General Stanley McChrystal has been stitched up by Rolling Stone.
This, however, could make Obama look more presidential. He needs all the help he can get in that department.

McChrystal showed incredibly poor judgement - he totally dishonored himself.

What exactly did he expect to happen saying what he said to a liberal mag like the Rolling Stones? I don’t disagree with anything he said, but the way he did it was in my opinion cowardly. He should have resigned first and then state his reason for resigning in a press conference.

That would have served both the country and himself well!

He should resign now and if he doesn’t Obama should fire him... I only wish we the people, as the ultimate commander in chief could then fire Obama.

You're right, up to a point. Probably near a hundred different countries and empires have "conquered" Afghanistan and some even lasted there long enough to leave recognizable genetic traces (Macedonian Greeks under Alexander are an example).

But eventually all of them found the cost of holding on to the place too high for what it was worth and the natives all too ready to fight on from the mountains and caves. In the immortal words of Rudyard Kipling about how Queen Victoria's troops were treated there:

When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.

We are “WINNING THEIR HEARTH & MINDS” - General William Westmoreland, Vietnam.

Over half a century later, “WINNING THEIR HEART & MINDS” is back.

That idea looks like a million dollars: wrinkled and green.

Sad when we have to go to Brit papers to get a balanced and honest story from a journalist about what's happening in our own country.
