All a firefighting boat needs is a couple of strong pumps and that should be about it. Of course I am sure they also need some LCD screens, leather furniture, and a kick ass sound system.
The deployable speed boat is pretty cool. Put a couple of tow ropes on it, and you could go water skiing down the Hudson River.
At least this is a useful product produced for the citizens compared to high priced pensions paid out for getting virtually nothing in return.
Yeah, they’d never need to rescue a plane full of people who landed in the Hudson river or deal with crashed helicopters. No risk of terrorists using a container ship to sneak WMDs into NY harbor.

Actually, those remote-controlled water cannons would be boss on a container ship. Think Somali pirates off the port bow.
As for the boat itself, I hope they make provision for an onboard Hercules team.

Senseless and pointless remark without some sort of coherent context to argue the boats are unnecessary. Actually it is always easier to do nothing, regardless of the need.
Fireboats cost money, but any major shipping port without them will eventually suffer catastrophic losses that would otherwise be avoidable. What’s your point ?
Maybe I’m not qualified to make a comment here. And I’m not sure about 27 million. But this doesn’t seem to be an outrageous purchase for a city of over 8 million that sets next to water. I’m not sure what people mean that this is a waste. Maybe not. I’m not sure how long this boat will be in service. Maybe if this boat is used for 20-30 years, it’s not a bad investment. Anyway as long as the city of New York paid for it without Federal Funds, it’s okay to me.
Regardless 27 million is a lot, what abnout the Port Authroit, Coast Guard or other agencies? Firefighters aren’t trained for water rescues or antiterrorism .
Maybe in Wisconsin they aren't, but in New York City they are.
The only thing that bothers me is the remote control fire cannons. Too much tech means that too much can go wrong.
I don't know the age of every vessel the FDNY has, but most of the fireboats are 50+ to 70+ years old.

Here’s an untold story. Governor’s Island, which for centuries served as the hub of port security in NY Harbor was basically abandoned during budget cuts to the Coast Guard during the Clinton Administration. It was then turned over to the City Of New York, who intend to develop it for entertainment and educational purposes.
IMO, the Federal Gov’t should have kept it and made it a state of the art operations facility for harbor security, customs, air traffic and all national and local security issues that need to be addressed. Instead, we get another park. All about 1/2 mile from the World Trade Center. Brilliant!
