Obama's 58 minutes in Ohio

President Barack Obama turned his attention from the BP oil spill Friday to talk about another concern: economic recovery.

But not for long — 58 minutes to be exact.

In fact, he spent less time on the ground in Columbus, Ohio, than it took to fly there and back.

The president revved up Air Force One, flew to Ohio, motorcaded to a road construction site, gave a speech on the Recovery Act and flew back to Washington all in the span of three hours. Less than an hour of that was on the ground.

The president has had a chaotic week. He started off with a two-day visit to the Gulf Coast and a prime time Oval Office address. The next day he met with BP executives and managed to wrangle a $20 billion escrow fund to pay claims.

Presidents do day-trips all the time, but the Ohio jaunt was an eye-blink by any measure. Air Force One went wheels up at 10:35 a.m.

The plane landed in Columbus about an hour later. The president shook hands and briefly chatted with Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher and Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman at the bottom of the jet's stairs.

A few minutes later his entire entourage was motorcading to the construction site eight miles away from the Port Columbus International Airport.

Flanked by seven construction workers in yellow safety vests, Obama stood at a presidential podium and delivered a 13-minute speech on the importance of the Recovery Act. He highlighted small business loans, tax cuts and transportation projects in Ohio. And he pushed for strong infrastructure to build a solid foundation for America's revival.

No mention on how many rounds of golf he played during the week and how long it took?

It’s my understanding that many on the construction crew lost a day’s wage on this trip. Could be wrong about that.

If true, I wonder why the contractor didn’t pay his crew. He’s got a fat juicy government contract. He was more than willing and happy to take that so-called stimulus money.

They should buy him a two seat crop duster for these short hops.

Yep, he’s such a big Sox fan. Ya right.

He said he remembers going to “COMINSKY PARK”, pronouncing it with an “N”, when every real fan knows it was “COMISKEY PARK”, with no “N” in it.

The same guy who mispronounced the military term “corpsman” by pronouncing the “S” when anybody who knows anything knows that the “s” is silent.

I cringe at the thought that someday he will give a speech about the Marine Corps, and he will read the teleprompter and pronounce it “Corpse”.

Of course as a good Democrat, he can’t get the Dan Quayle treatment for this sort of thing. We’re supposed to ignore it.

Those 13 minutes cost the Taxpayers almost $1 million dollars to pay for the trip, security etc. Talk about executive excess!!

The trip was just another campaign jaunt with a teleprompter speech. It gives him another opportunity to display what he does best which is campaign—making promises which turn out to be lies. Also, the trip only cost us taxpayers half a million ($500,000) dollars. All of it borrowed on the credit card that is beyond maxed-out.

Someone please tell me how to explain this expenditure to my grandchildren. They will have to pay for it.

The man just cannot stay in the oval office and govern because he doesn't know how, and he has surrounded himself with staff and advisers of a like ilk.

Of the 57 comments following the article on Politico, I found only one that didn’t criticize and ridicule Obama. The comment section read just like here, Big Government or American Thinker.

Is Politico a right-leaning site or has the tide completely reversed?

The trip Columbus probably cost taxpayers between $500,000 and $1 million. Air Force One alone bills out at $100,000 per hour, and the round trip is nearly two hours. Adding to the cost are military aircraft to carry limos and secret service vehicles, Marine One on standby, Secret Service, local police and other factors.

Obama's Stimulus Visit Results in Lost Payday for Construction Workers--The workers were told not to report to their construction project at a nearby hospital Friday, because the Secret Service was shutting it down for security reasons. They also were told that they would not get paid for the forced day off.

Is the presidential teleprompter battery operated or did they have to run a generator for what was surely a momentous 13 minute campaign speech?/s
