On a day that Nevada’s unemployment rate topped the nation, Sen. Harry Reid said things would be even worse if Democrats had not acted to create or save jobs through economic stimulus.
Reid, D-Nev., defended Democrats in a Senate speech Friday morning, saying 3 million Americans going to work today have Democrats to thank for pushing through the economic recovery bill last year.
“The economy in Nevada is not in good shape. It is getting better but not good,” he said. “We are one of the leading states in the union with unemployment but think how much worse it would be if we have not been able to create these jobs in Nevada with the recovery bill.”
Reid said the stimulus act “has created or saved more than 4,000 jobs in just the past four months alone,” in Nevada. The highway bill that Congress extended earlier this year saved “hundreds and hundreds of jobs” in the state, he said.
“We worked hard to create jobs,” he said, noting the Obama administration was about to recognize the 10,000th road project funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The act that was enacted in February 2009 authorized $787 billion for a variety of programs intended to create jobs and promote investment in response to the recession.
Meanwhile, Republicans pounced on the news that Nevada’s unemployment rate increased to 14 percent in May.
Republican National Committee spokesman Jahan Wilcox claimed by that measure the stimulus has failed, and that in his role as the Senate majority leader, “nobody has done more to ensure that Nevada leads the country in unemployment than Harry Reid.”

Harry’s finally number one at something! My sympathies to the people of Nevada but you have GOT to vote this bedbug out of the Senate.
I'm going to have to agree with him. Given the Obama agenda they pushed through, a massive amount of people have lost wages/jobs/bennies. The fact that they are using the Fed to finance government workers and unions, is true. So, had it not been for the stimulaus, the Obama agenda would have unemployed millions more.
Angle needs to jump all over this. She needs to talk about the failure of the Obama/Reid economy and hammer it non-stop.
She really has an easy election if she makes it all about jobs and the economy. We have the most anti-business administration in history and Harry Reid is one of its chief architects.
Reid was there as our economy crashed and burned and continues to this day to bring up more job-killing legislation like ObamaCare and Cap and Tax.
