The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea was first adopted in 1914 in response to the Titanic disaster. Along with mandating the number of lifeboats and the notification of a ship's routes, it also dictates that any ship in the area of a distress call will divert to assist that ship.

I was expecting a single word response.
She never did, from Capetown on she was doomed.
I'm on a shaky hookup away from home, or I'd do it, but you can look up the wind charts for all of the oceans. They are for each ocean, and each month of the year, and show the direction and strength of the wind, based on % of days of various wind strengths. Each couple of degrees of lat and lon has a "wind rose" icon, with little arrows extending out in all directions. Longer/more arrows indicate wind direction and greater strength. The Southern Ocean in winter is just the NIGHTMARE of the PLANET. The winds below the Great Capes just keep on going, unimpeded by land, circling Antarctica. It's much worse than the North Pacific/Bering Sea (think of those "Most Dangerous Catch" TV shows) or the North Atlantic (think "Perfect Storm.) They are CALM compared to the Southern Ocean in winter! Even in the summer "sailing season" only the top pros try the Southern Ocean, because horrendous gales sweep through one after another. In summer! In winter, it's just OFF THE CHARTS, a "no-go zone" for sailing, PERIOD. Her father should be keelhauled for sending her out of Captetown in the southern winter. She had NO chance of making Australia. NONE.
Nope.
As well they should. This time it was Sunderland who needed rescue but every ship who responded knows that next time it could be them.
You can be the best sailor in the world, with the best boat, the best crew but the sea never rests in it's quest to kill you.
Call it paying it forward. Call it harvest law. It is what should be.
Thanks. That was much more info than I had seen before.
Um. You say there’s “nothing emotional about it”? He called her parents “Balloon Boy media-whore fame-grubbers” — without having all the information about their motives. He is extremely emotional about this issue.
I’m defending the family, because we don’t have all the information about them.
Travis McGee is attacking them — calling them “Balloon Boy media-whore fame-grubbers” — without having all the information.
He is quick to damn, quick to judge, and I’m urging level-headedness. Disagree with her trip, but don’t damn her parents.
I did not realize he was part of her crew. My bad.
You are pompous. Your experience sailing makes you think you know the MOTIVES of her family. You don’t. You know about masts and rudders; you do not know this family.
It’s fine to question this girl’s route during winter. But to damn her family, by calling her parents “Balloon Boy media-whore fame-grubbers,” is over the top.
You look happy in that picture. That’s good.
Travis called the parents “Balloon Boy media-whore fame-grubbers,” based on his experience on a sailboat and a few news reports from people with low expectations for young adults, from people who hate homeschooling Christians, from people who’d prefer young adults play video games than travel the world.
The girl and her parents may have been motivated to break the record, but that does not mean her parents are “Balloon Boy media-whore fame-grubbers.”
Try reading sailing forums. This family is not unknown.
Travis McGee is attacking them calling them Balloon Boy media-whore fame-grubbers without having all the information.
He's a sailor that built his own boat. He KNOWS how risky this was. He is judging actions based on facts. Do you sail?
He is quick to damn, quick to judge,
And yet you conveniently ignore your own emotional personal attack.
More so, stupid stunts like this; open the door to more .gov regulation, like 'permits', 'licenses' etc.
The WEATHER they sent this kid out in speaks to motive. She was scheduled to leave this year. To beat Watson, they hurried the kids trip and took risks that were unnecessary. THAT speaks to what kind of person someone is. Actions show who a person is, not their words.
He wasn’t part of her crew.
My original comment stands.
Why do I even bother talking with you? You just refuse to understand what point I’m making.
I point out that Travis is going over the top when he damns the character of this young woman’s parents, and then you counter by talking about the sailboat itself. It’s fine to discuss the facts about the route and such, but he doesn’t know their MOTIVES.
I called him “pompous” because he thinks he understands this family’s MOTIVES; he’s a sailing expert, NOT an expert on this family’s MOTIVES. What part of the English language do you not understand?
Do you think this girl was mindless, simply controlled by her parents’ whims? Or do you think she had a say in when she would sail and which route she would take?
If you’re all in favor of damning her parents, you should damn her as well. Be consistent.
Ex Navy. All ships are required to respond to distress calls and not expect repayment. Otherwise you get ships not responding to distress unless you have your Visa card handy. The issue of whether her parents are idiots/derilict for allowing this trip is a separate issue.
Your Post 33 to me.
Are you jealous that shes accomplished more in 16 years than you have in your entire life? Do you feel like a loser compared to her, and your final solution is to destroy her?
We see who her parents are by their actions. You know absolutely nothing about me. Yet you condemn someone else's opinion that is based on facts and ignore your behavior that was based on disagreement of an opinion.
That's right. And has judged the parents by their ACTIONS. Something posters do on FR everyday when discussing politicians.
Don't listen to what they say,
Watch what they do.
And that is what the sailing community has done. And some of them know the Sunderlands. These people have not lived in a vacuum.
