In a media conference Tuesday, Republican Congressional candidate William "Bill" Randall took aim at what he said were false attacks against him by his primary opponent, Bernie Reeves.
Randall and Reeves are battling for the GOP nomination to face incumbent Democrat Rep. Brad Miller in the 13th Congressional District.
In a series of open letters to Randall posted on his campaign web site, Reeves has suggested that Randall is lying about or exaggerating parts of his personal biography. Posts on Reeves website have questioned whether Randall had "leadership oversight" over 16,000 sailors while serving in the U.S. Navy, whether he has a master's degree and wether he was really a Baptist minister.
"If he can't conceptualize something, he attacks it," Randall said of Reeves. "I want to talk about the real issues that matter to the voters."
On the Reeves website, a post by campaign consultant Carter Wrenn called attention to a statement made by Randall in a televised debate that he had oversight over 16,000 sailors as a Command Master Chief Petty Officer, the highest non-commissioned rank in the Navy.
"That is impressive," Wrenn wrote. "However, you were neither an admiral or the captain of an aircraft carrier ... Bill, how is it possible, as a Command Master Chief Petty Office(r), you lead more men than a Major General of the Army in command of a full division?"
On Tuesday, Randall answered by releasing a copy of a "Fitness Report" filled out in 2000 by his commanding officer, Capt. E.W. Gantt. [...]
Under a box outlining Randall's duties at the base, the captain wrote: "responsible for supervision and performance of 250 senior enlisted staff in the training an welfare of over 17,000 recruits."

A Command Master Chief Petty Officer, the highest non-commissioned rank in the Navy, does have significant weight.
He trains young officers, he advises old officers, and he is the fact getter for the 4 Star.
He knows more about everything than a 4 Star.
That seems to be one of many things that Reeves and Wrenn have over-reached on. They’ve really come out looking foolish.
That said, I’ve heard bad things about Randall too. May the best man win and then beat Brad Miller.
My experience only. I do not know either of the candidates positions, histories or drawbacks.
But, Air Force speaking here, Command Chief Master Sergeants run the wing so the Wing CC can go to city functions, award ceremonies, and ribbon cuttings.
Brad Miller is a POS that tried to get me fired from my place of business. He solicited a contribution from me (a known Republican in my district) by sending me the red meat letter that he sent out to his supporters right after the passage of Obamacare. I sent him a pretty direct response basically voicing my disapproval over his tactics. His office then saw where I had worked from the letterhead and then proceeded to tell our IT people that I had threatened him. All I told him was that I was going to strongly support and campaign for his Republican opponent in order to get him defeated. This was during the time that the Dems were given their marching orders to try and define Tea Party members as dangerous.
Brad Miller is going to have to come out and face the voters in person and when he does I will confront him and challenge his positions with reasoned arguments and force him to defend who and what he is.
Please, God, let ANYONE beat Brad Miller...I would rather be represented by Mr. Hanky than by that smarmy snake....
He’s doing that elsewhere also. I got into a verbal exchange with one of his supporters on FaceBook and that Brad Miller supposedly got death threats was one of the fellow’s retorts. I’m figuring he’s counting you as one of those events. I never thought much of Brad Miller, so I’d love to see him retired. I also know of a strong supporter of Bernie Reeves who has been publishing materials suggesting that Bill Randall (with whom I’m friends on FB) has been plagiarizing things. I’m figuring a nasty internecine R fight here is bad for business, though it may be good in the long run if all that results is name-recognition.
Pretty touchy campaign coming, IMHO.
Reeves is a nutcase. We received many many voice mail messages from him before the primary. Randall may be a plant, but sadly he’s our best bet since Dist. 13 has a high number of, uhmm, “low income census tracts” (read black identity group voters).
Brad Miller is just a slimeball. The gerrymandered district 13 was created just for him. I sent his office an e-mail asking him to vote against the Health Care bill, specifically concerned with the “medical device tax”. (my employer will be severely affected by that). I mentioned that I was anxiously awaiting the vote to determine my choice of support in November.
After the HB vote was long over, I then received the expected canned democrat response. I expect that his staff checked voter registration party affiliation prior to responding.
I hope he gets his clock cleaned in November. The putz.
