As the Spill Expands, So Does Presidential Power

The other day, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs was asked what will happen if the people running BP decline to go along with everything the administration demands of it. "The president," he replied with chilly menace, "has the legal authority to compel them to do so, and if they don't, he will."

As a matter of strict truth, Barack Obama may not have all the legal authority he would need. But punctilious adherence to the law is rarely the hallmark of American presidents.

>As the Spill Expands, So Does Presidential Power

Now you see why the president hasn’t been quick to address the oil spill, or to accept foreign help in dealing w/ the situation.

First there was the announcement that the Justice Department is considering criminal charges. It's entirely possible that in the fullness of time, evidence will emerge to support prosecution. But as a first resort, it discourages BP from working closely with the government to cope with the current emergency.

In this regard, I can't help but think of the O.J. Simpson civil trial. It stands to reason that the plaintiffs would want to milk Simpson for everything he had. A wiser course of action would have been to milk him for half of everything he had, and leave him with the wherewithal to produce income, the better for him to be able to pay the judgement against him. The same is true with BP. Destroy them, and you'll end up with nothing.

I haven’t heard one moron in the state run “media” refer to this as an “historical” oil spill. It appears as though the toadies in the “media” have lost their love of “history”.

Did you hear the statistics Rush read from an article today....NOT to minimize the spill....however...to put it in perspective someone did some analysis....there’s something like 665,000 quadrillian gallons of water in the Gulf....if the well gushes 20,000 gallons (I think) a day thru August, it will be the equivalent of 1/1 millionth of an oz of oil in your average full bath tub....

Folks on both the left and right are screaming every day for O to do something they have even named it Obama’s spill

It seems strange that they would also complain about giving him or his taking power the to respond to their cries..kinda like being careful what you wish for..

I have maintained from the beginning this is over blown by the 24/7 news cycle

Its always best to threaten someone before you seek their cooperation. That way you are sure not to make any enemies; they will always have your best interest at heart.

These clowns want to run roughshod over established law. Its a game you better have the resources to win on the first roll of the dice.

You don’t understand socialists. To destroy wealth and the ability to produce it means to remain with nothing. It is the misconception of people on the right that the left wants to redistribute wealth. From Marx to the present, socialists have never wanted a distribution of wealth. Rather, they want all power to the collective (ie. the party) and the total destruction of capitalism and it’s ruling class. In their view equality trumps materialism and individualism every time. Solidarity requires we all share the traits of the most downtrodden.

Obama and BP just created another slush fund.

In this case, it might be referred to as a "sludge" fund.
