AP-GfK Poll Bolsters Congressional Democrats

ALAN FRAM, TREVOR TOMPSON June 16, 2010 WASHINGTON - There's encouraging news for Democrats battling to retain control of Congress in this fall's elections, with the party holding a slender edge in public trust for shepherding the economy and small gains in those saying their finances are healthy, according to a new poll.

The reeling economy remains people's top concern, according to an Associated Press-GfK Poll conducted earlier this month, making public attitudes about it crucial for both parties' hopes in November. The good news for Democrats: By a margin of 47 percent to 42 percent, people trust them more than Republicans to guide the economy, and slightly more — 64 percent — say their household budgets are in good shape.

In addition, people want Democrats to win control of Congress by a 46 percent to 39 percent margin.

This poll is an outlier and a joke.

This poll includes non-voter dopers

People that aren’t even registered to vote no doubt.

Look, it is at the bottom of the article:

“The AP-GfK Poll involved landline and cell phone interviews with 1,044 randomly chosen adults and was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Corporate Communications from June 9 to 14. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.”

That is a pretty wide margin too.

We have a fickle set of independents and the unions are expected to pour in more than $150 million in ads against the Republicans.

This poll does not even qualify as an “outlier” because it was conducted unscientifically: any survey of “randomly-selected adults” polled by telephone is worthless as a means of identifying who is a voter, who is likely to vote, and how strongly they feel about key issues.

Reality:

Generic Congressional Ballot: Republicans 46%, Democrats 36%
June 14, 2010 ^ | June 14, 2010 | Rasmussen

"Republican candidates now hold a 10-point lead over Democrats on the Generic Congressional Ballot for the week ending Sunday, June 13. That ties the GOP’s largest ever lead, first reached in April, since it first edged ahead of the Democrats a year ago."

Let the Democrats believe this and act accordingly.

Randomly selected in Liberal areas. This poll is desperate and pathetic.

To: Steelfish; All

everyone should BELIEVE this poll and work like HELL to make it wrong.

I am concerned we are going to lay back, expecting a victory in November, and wake up to a sad, bad surprise on November 3.

Believe in your heart this poll is accurate and that ONLY your participation in the system will turn it around.

Even the Democrats know that most polling shows Democrats are in big trouble:

Scott Rasmussen's polling of "likely voters" has the Republicans with a 10-point lead on the Generic Congressional ballot.

The Democrats are whistling past the graveyard. Unless there is are a series of miracles with respect to everything from the oil slick to the economy, the Democrats are going to get blown out of the water in November.

I understand. But, remember they spent $10 million in Arkansas trying to defeat Blanche Lincoln in the Dem Senate Primary and did NOT succeed. They've wasted money on other races as well. We'll see.

Polls like this actually will hurt the DIMs come November. As others have mentioned, there are a lot of fickle, wavering voters out there who probably voted D and/or voted for Barry. However, if they see this poll that shows DIMs sweeping to a huge victory, they’ll just stay home because in their mind their one vote won’t matter.

That is a natural artifact of telephone polls conducted at home addresses because of who tends to be home and who agrees to take the call. Personally, I'm all for anything the makes the Democrats feel like they're safe. Let them live in their little cocoon and wake up shocked in November.
