President Obama's Oval Office speech last night focused on the Gulf oil catastrophe, but its true purpose was impossible to miss: shoring up the president's tanking popularity.
Some 57 days after the BP oil rig blew -- triggering an underwater oil gusher that's yet to be contained -- a majority of Americans, polls show, think Obama's been too detached from the crisis.
Thus, the president is taking a new tack: huffing and puffing.
"Tonight, I've returned from a trip to the Gulf Coast to speak with you about the battle we're waging against an oil spill that is assaulting our shores and our citizens," he said.
But unless Obama knows something no one else does, it's not an assault, but a catastrophic accident -- though the term does build on a theme he began Sunday by comparing the spill to 9/11.
And that was a grotesquerie: As New Yorkers know best, the attack that day was a premedi tated act of war.
Equally off-base is his new approach to the spill: demonizing BP beyond reason.

Obama’s intentions? All BAD!
Now that’s funny, cerebral, but funny!
Obama tried to conjure up FDR ala a "Fireside Chat" Lend-Lease speech ...
But he spent more time "lecturing" the public that alternative energy sources need to be developed ...
However, when my house is on fire - I do not need Obama lecturing me that I should have built my house out of concrete ...
I NEED HIM TO GIVE ME A DAMN HOSE TO PUT THE FIRE OUT !!!
Obama wants a divided America, whatever it takes and no matter what the differences, he cannot allow a united America to work against his agenda.
The Tea Party is a good example of a bad dream for Obama, millions of Americans unified totally scared him and his organizers.
And its about time we show our Unified beliefs in numbers again.
i saw where olberfool and madcow weren’t happy with it either...now that is saying something right there....
ahhh those were the days .....America has lost that attitude by a gov’t that has an attitude of don’t worry we will take care and provide for you...
I love the references to America going to the moon when Dear Reader just shut down the space program.
Guess he figured we all are too stupid to grasp the hypocrisy.
I suspect it’s the new immigrants who have changed America.
They voted for politicians who promised them easy living. More minimum wage, more benefits, more free day care, more free free free.
The people who arrived on our shores following the war were determined to work hard and make a better life for their children.
And then we have our own supposedly ‘greatest generation’
Their children, the boomers, are spoiled rotten, demanding, manipulative, and often corrupt to the bone. Why not cheat in school, everyone does it kind of people.
Blech.
Offhand I'd say about 50%+ couldn't even look at him on TV without retching. The next 25% were doing a nation wide "face-palm" and the final 25% were either asleep, dead or so stoned they thought they'd tuned into the season finale of "Lost"...
Yes. He's doing it right now (the EPA is sitting on Texas's permit renewals for the Corpus Christi refinery and my two whipped "senators" voted to say that was ok). Those actions also include coal plants and mountaintop mines (clean water act perversions). All the EPA is really doing is throwing out paperwork technicalities, there is not a breath or hint about global warming in any of their responses. In reality, green is just an easy way for him to kill the economy and eliminate the middle class.
And what we ended up seeing:
Some of my friends are boomers who voted for this POS. In some cases the problem is the pointlessness of suburban existence which the happy pills fail to paper over.
Sadly, I wouldn’t know how! I was trying to find a visual to indicate that obama wants to parallel his...aw, heck! That was yesterday, and I can’t remember what I was trying to do!
;-)
:-D
:-D
Took a little time but I worked it out.
