Ukiah, Calif. (AP) -- A Northern California man who fatally shot a family friend accused of molesting him for years was sentenced Tuesday to nine years in prison in the vigilante shooting.

Aaron Vargas, 32, was sentenced after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter in the death of 63-year-old Darrell McNeill.

Vargas said McNeill began sexually abusing him when he was 11

. . .
several other people ... came forward to say McNeill had molested them.

Hundreds of supporters ... asked authorities for leniency for the shooter.

. . .

Judge Ronald Brown said he imposed the harsher sentence because he believed Vargas had gone to McNeill's house with the intent to kill him, and that the use of violence to solve problems would only encourage more violence.

Pretty good.

It’s hard in our mortal state to let go and have God steer....right.

a revenge killing works for me if it’s revenge for a act that should call for a death penalty.

To clarify: I’m not saying the shooter was justified. We can’t allow people to just go around extracting personal “justice”. HOWEVER. Increasingly we are deluged with examples of egregious criminals getting off with pansy treatment while some poor guy goes to jail for years for neglecting to fill out federal form. Or they go to prison for some other inconsequential act that Federal prosecutors use to get easy convictions for the purpose of increasing their “success” rate which leads to bonuses and promotions. Our legal system is breaking down. The courts are increasingly used not to help maintain a civil society but as an enforcement arm of the social engineers.

Whatever the facts of the matter anyone can perceive the frustration of the majority of decent people who see their corrupt officials get away with crimes. Eventually the storm will break and the consequences for the people who accepted the responsibility of the public trust will find themselves in very precarious positions. Entire nations have fallen because of the injustice and corruption of their legal systems. It could happen here.

Even though the shooter isn’t justified a tough sentence only adds to the perception of a corrupt legal system.

If I was on jury, I would have voted “Not Guilty”.

“No. This isn’t “Minority Report.” There are no future crimes.”

You can’t take that logic too far. What is the purpose of incarceration, if not to prevent the criminal from re-offending, at least during that time? What is the purpose of the death penalty, if not to prevent the criminal from ever murdering again?

This was a revenge killing, not a killing in self defense. He deserved some jail time.

Not only does he not deserve jail time, but he deserves to be paid back for the gas it took him to get to this guys house and the bullets used to kill him.

There must be a special place in hell for anyone who would molest a child.

“In other words, vigilantism is justified. Bring on the lynchings!”

I do think it is justified when there is no criminal justice system, or a ridiculously ineffective one.

When child molesters are sent back into society after two years served, something is insanely wrong. The recidivism rate approaches 100%.

we don’t leave it up to murderers to decide what’s appropriate.

No we leave it up to lax and liberal judges who would have probably let the perv free to harm again. the molested victim settled the case as would myself you harm me you die.Call me a murderer if you want. What would you have done if it were your son or daughter who was molested by this guy.

Nine years to assure that no one else suffers at the hands of a child molester?

Yeah, it would be worth it. Well worth it.

Still, would have been smarter to kill him from rifle distance without any witnesses.

and that the use of violence to solve problems would only encourage more violence.

As opposed to ignoring sexual molestation. Hey judge you think buggering kids might not be a type of violence?

“Call me a murderer if you want”

I wouldn’t call you a murderer unless you murdered. You are a suborner of murder.

Had McNeill been brought before this judge, he’d have been released under the judge’s theory that, what the hell, the victims survived to adulthood, didn’t they?

But the 62-year-old guy he murdered was probably molested as a child, too. Fifty years ago, say. So it follows we can't judge the HIM by normal standards, either, I suppose?

How far back would you want to take that?

I would have nullified that crime had I been on the jury and not given the judge a chance to decide on sending him to prison. It would have been better if the guy had not killed the perp but homosexual child molestion is hugely damaging to a lot of men and sometimes they are going to need to take out their sexual tormentor.

Ever read “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”?

yup around a hundred years ago.....it was a novel, not history....

ever see Lonesome Dove....also not history(the original miniseries with Duvall and Jones)?

they hung their friend Jake Spoon cause he traveled with dirt bags who were murdering folks 'for sh!ts and giggles' even though he did not do it himself.

in the end he was glad he was being hung by friends and not strangers.....
